After a long silent month we are glad to announce that we release a new version of GPS Serial (code-named 1.2). It should fix a lot of problems including incompatibilities with Navigon and Sygic. Moreover it fixes the speed issue that everybody has. The software is now consuming less battery and it is now totally inactive when the GPS is not used (even the serial port is closed, for technical people ). It will be available in some hours in the usual ModMyI repository which is included with any Cydia installation.

We want also to inform you that xGPS is not dead and we are actively working on a new version with complete vectorial maps (i.e. you will be able to bring your whole country or even the whole world right in your pocket). There is still a lot of work to do but we are on the good way. We hope to have a beta version ready for the beginning of September. We will make a new beta tester team for that occasion. More information about that will come in the following weeks so it is unnecessary to ask in the forums or anywhere else how to become a beta tester.

Thanks again for your patience and support.

We are proud to present to you the new release of our xGPS software tagged 1.0.1-4. This release includes some new features and a lot of bug fixes. Unfortunately we haven’t completely solved the problem concerning the downloading of maps. However things are now more stable than before and we are working to eliminate all the remaining bugs.

You must know that this version is not compatible with all the old maps you have downloaded until now. On the first launch they will be deleted! You are warned! However the xGPS Maps managing software is still compatible with this version.

This version add the experimental support of map auto-rotation. It means that the map will rotate according to your movings. It also the support of the iGPS360 from Orange Gadgets. GPX logging facilities are also included (so now you don’t have any excuse to not want to improve OpenStreetMap . You can enable it in the settings. Your position will then be logged to the file /tmp/xgps_gpxtrack.log in your iPhone or iPod Touch. There is currently no easy to get this file back (except through SSH/SFTP) but the xGPS Maps manager will soon be able to do that seemlessly.

Unfortunately this version isn’t fully localized due to some schedule problems. The next release will then be fully translated.

We remind you that our Cydia repository to be able to install this software is: http://cydia.xwaves.net

We thank you all for all your support.

We finally get a more or less usable version of our xGPS software (we are late of 2 hours, yes .

Before wanting to try the software, please make sure to understand the following sentences:

The current version of the software (1.0.0-1) is the first public alpha version. It means that not all the features are implemented and a lot of known bugs are present. You are entirely responsible to use this software.

The current version does not implement the driving directions or the possibility to search for a city. It will be implemented in the near future. The current version has also a problem with the detection of the xGPS module. Sometimes the button “Enable GPS / Disable GPS” disappear even if the xGPS module is connected. If you get that, you can relaunch the software if you want.

To download maps for using it offline, you can tap on Settings and then manage maps. Then you can select an area of the map and tap download to download it. Yes, we know that it is difficult to select an area without pushing the zoom buttons. It is being corrected .

This version is just here for testing purpose and it is in either cases not supported. We will not answer to any question if the software doesn’t work.

The xGPS software is only compatible on firmware 2.0 and greater (2.0.1 and 2.02 etc…) and works only with xGPS Modules (you can also use it without a GPS).

To install it, add the following repository to Cydia (if you don’t know how to do it, just read the quick start guide of xGPS module again):

http://cydia.xwaves.net/

Then browse the Navigation category and select xGPS.

Concerning the shipment of the xGPS modules, we have still a little delay. We hope to finish to send all the orders by the end of the week.

Thank you for your interest in our project.
