After a long silent month we are glad to announce that we release a new version of GPS Serial (code-named 1.2). It should fix a lot of problems including incompatibilities with Navigon and Sygic. Moreover it fixes the speed issue that everybody has. The software is now consuming less battery and it is now totally inactive when the GPS is not used (even the serial port is closed, for technical people
). It will be available in some hours in the usual ModMyI repository which is included with any Cydia installation.
We want also to inform you that xGPS is not dead and we are actively working on a new version with complete vectorial maps (i.e. you will be able to bring your whole country or even the whole world right in your pocket). There is still a lot of work to do but we are on the good way. We hope to have a beta version ready for the beginning of September. We will make a new beta tester team for that occasion. More information about that will come in the following weeks so it is unnecessary to ask in the forums or anywhere else how to become a beta tester.
Thanks again for your patience and support.
Any update on the xGPS Manager for Mac? Routes and Traces aren’t working yet. It’s great news that you are keeping this apps with upgrades, thank you
Having already beta-tested the new GPSSerial update, I can tell you that it is an excellent update: the speed is now correctly display and all the major navigation apps on the AppStore will work with it (including Navigon and Sygic). Also, the heading issue in Sygic and Navigon has disappeared and your route is now also automatically re-calculated for both of those app when you go off-route.
Consider donating a few dollars to Mathieu for his continued hard work!!

Does that mean that all connectable GPS modules work with Navigon/Sygic? Or these is a list of supported devices. I have been holding the purchase of a iGPS360 in favour of a not released yet TomTom, for my ipod touch. TomTom will likely be avialable in Canada while iGPS360 is a troublesome cross-border purchase.
xGPS Mangaer will no longer be needed for xGPS 2.0, so there is a good chance that no updates will be released. There may be a new PC based software for routes and things like that though, no promises
The iGPS360 is definitely worth it, remember… tomtom only supports its own app, and the package will cost ~$200. Why cant you buy the iGPS360 in canada?
Can you give a new run down of how to exactly use this app. Is it the same as the others? If using xGPS with it enabled do we still need to select iPhone 3G gps? Any help will be great.
@Nathan,
It would cost $18.99-$32.49 on top of the $75 + whatever fee and customs charges the shipper feels like charging me that day! I avoid North American cross border shopping as much as possible. One too many bad experiences.
Still I will give it a go if it works as seamlessly as an onboard GPS/
I live in Canada, and purchased the iGPS360. Yes it may cost a little more with the shipping and whatnot, but it’s cheaper than buying a stand-alone mobile GPS (unless you get a cheap, feature limited one). If you already have a Touch, why not get the iGPS360? Best mobile GPS/Media combo platform in MHO!
Big thumbs up to the dev(s)… the new gpsserial 1.2 works flawlessly so far. Awsome job! Thanks!!
Oh ya… I believe the current exchange rate is 0.91, 0.92 or close to that. Order now Chatperdu
Thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome! Thanks Matt! You’re a legend. Will take it for a test run tomorrow!!
I tested the new update on xGPS, but the speedmeter always shows ‘0′, any wrong with me?
Can’t find GPSSerial in Icy, do I have to add a new repository? thx Ingo
Uups, I do mean I can’t find 1.2!
I tested the new update with xgps reciver and iGo my way. I lost signal every 3-4 sec. The position is displayed correctly but it seems to be a bug with signal.
The speed is also still random for me as well. I only drove around for a bit. Today on my way to work I am going to try out Sygic and see how that works.
@ ThrillSeeker
They are out of stock at the moment, now that I am quite ready to commit
After trying sygic the results were quite amazing. The program worked great. It seemed to work better than xgps as far as the speed readout goes.
It works!!!! Niceeee jobbb i love it. iPod touch 2g 3.0 jailbreak igps360 im using navigon And gmap I can’t compaling is perfect the best is that recalculate that’s what I need with out wifi conection love it, thank youuuu soo
muchhh. It was worth it to buy the igps360 yeeeeiiiieee soo happy jajajaja
@ ChatPerdu
Didn’t realize that… wait till they are back in stock… worth it
First of all a big THANK YOU for the new version of the app. It works with a lot more apps than before (eg. GPS, GPS Motion X Lite).
I’m using igpsd cable with a holux 236 and got a little problem.
If I change the gps device in gps serial (otherwise some apps that use the localize feature don’t work) and switch back to “igpd”, this device setting isn’t stored. All other settings are stored correctly. Only a new installation (with new input of the igpsd serial number) stores the igpsd device. If I change it again, I can’t store igpsd device again.
Any suggestions?
Thanx
Yes it’s a known problem. It’ll be corrected in the next version.
Mathieu
Please, if is possible, corect the issues with iGo.
iGo is reporting the actual position but is loosing the signal every 2-3 seconds.
A big thanks Mathieu, this is just great work. I noticed the update yesterday and tested Navigon on iphone 2G 3.0.1 with iGPS360 this morning. Speed is now correctly indicated including sign and warning message.
Jean.
PS: for the people that can’t find GPSSerial in Cydia: look for “GPS Serial” (notice the space in the name). I had the same difficulty finding it
@ChatPerdu: the iGPS360 is back in stock.
Does anyone know if it works with tomtom?
Will test it with tomtom later today. I’ll let you know if it works!
I tested it with tomtom myself and the results weren’t very great. The app thinks that I am turning onto a street when I am not. This is much like Navagon. The best app out of Navagon, Tomtom and Sygic for use with gps serial is by far Sygic in my opinion.
Ps I am running with a ipod touch 2g on 3.0 with a igps360
I’ve had that same problem with Navigon. It thinks I’m turning onto a street when I’m really not. That’s why I want to try Tomtom, but don’t have much faith in it considering what William is now saying.
May also have to go with Sygic
Well have the same problem, but it look more like a gpsserial bug. because before i update it it was fine. after the 1.2 update i have the same problems, even if i uninstall, restart and reinstall it. or maybe my igps360 is starting to be buggy little bit.
iGPS360 module + GPSSerial + TomTom is working on 1th Gen, 3G and 3GS. But still advice …WAIT FOR THE NEW XGPS and save some money. The leftover…….please donate to the xGPS team!!!
Will xGPS integrate Skyhook technology, to better assist in geolocation in dense urban areas? I’m not sure any of the current turn-by-turn competitors do this. Does anyone know? It might make devices like the Tom Tom cradle obsolete. Just an idea…
Great program. I hope you fix it so that when you turn off iTunes during voice direction that you turn it back on ala the Tom Tom.
I don’t know if it has it now, but in the future would it be possible to include GPS logging to GPX files? Might be nice to have that so we can geotag pictures and have a log.
Any chance of integrating in the openCGI API with Novatel’s new MiFi product? It’s a simple http request that can be parsed for the lat/long and then run through your gpsserial app to provide GPS coordinates to the appstore apps.. plus the ipod touch users would be wifi!

I can’t see all detailed map information in XGPS iphone application and XGPS Manager Map download function compared to maps.google.com.
In google map, we can see detailed map information something like Block No.(for Singapore). Why it is different?
Ipod Touch 1st Gen + GPS Serial + iGPSD Cable + Holux 236 working fine with Sygic, iGo and NAVIGON. (By the way Sygic is the best IMO)
Great job, thanks
There is still a problem with the wrong direction in all Nav. applications with GPS Serial. When it will be fixed?
You have done a wonderful job with this and thanks for making the app available to all. It certainly works and I’m eagerly awaiting the next update with vectorial maps.
Thank you!
Sorry, but where is external Bluetooth GPS receiver support for Iphone 2G?
Write Iphone Bluetooth GPS in google.com and you will see how many people are looking for it
Disappointed
with gpsserial 1.2 TomTom, Navigon, iGo always point north/north east. Cygic and xGPS are the only apps properly working.
Testing with Holux 236, iGPSD cable and jailbroken Ipod Touch 2G.
I’ve heard that gpsserial 1.1 may work just show incorrect speed. I would like to test but where can I get 1.1 version?
I have an iphon first gen with igps360, gpsserial 1.2 soft v 3.01 .only waze is working all ather programs :sygic, igo, navigon no gps signal. i allready reset the phone ,install and desinstall programs and nothing.I have do edd some ather programs for igps360? or what?

I’m having grey maps! iphone 2g, igps360, os3.1, latest xgps. gps signal and locating is fine. I live in michigan, US. I search and find that this is a claimed-removed bug from long ago, but I nevertheless find it! why is that?
Just updated to the latest 1.2.9 and itinerary can’t compute anymore. Returns error everytime I try to compute a route. Using google maps and running iPhone 3GS internal GPS with firmware 3.0.
Before the update I had 1.0.xx and it was working great. Please help!
I uninstalled and did manual install of the 1.2.7.deb package and it works again. Problem is 1.2.9 cannot compute the itineraries anymore for me. Keep up the good work Mathieu this program is phenomenal.
1.2.10 on the way to fix this problem. Sorry for that.
1.2.10 fixed it! Thank you.
Same problem.
Both Navigon and TomTom work great, the coordinates and speed are both correct but the software of both apps assumes that i´m always turrning to the right and sometimes even backwards.
This way makes navigation impossible.
Still think that navigation is a bit slower than on a true TomTom or even on a Symbian S60 with TOMTOM and wireless gps like the Holux GPSslim 236 (and this works really perfectly!!). I´m using the IGPSD cable with gpsserial 1.2 and the holux 236 on a IPOD touch 2g.
Thank for all the improvements but please fix this issue and i´m still waiting for bluetooth solution…..
Continue with the good work
Hi Mathieu,
Does the problem Gus have will be the same on the 3GS?
Thanks
I tried xGPS manager 1.1 on two different laptops and always get gray maps…Is there anybody having same trouble than me ?
