GPSSerial got an update

Just a small post that we have released an update of GPSSerial which should fix some issues found on certain AppStore software and especially those issues which were stopping updating the GPS position and then making GPSSerial to crash. So now everything should work a lot smoother and your battery should not be drained anymore by GPSSerial when it is not used. We are aware that there is still a bug with the speedometer (which, sometimes, show 0 for the speed), especially with xGPS. We are working on this. In the mean time you can run your Cydia or Icy to fetch the latest GPSSerial number 1.1.

Oh and by the way, don’t buy any costly GPS softwares that you can found now on the AppStore. The next gen. xGPS will certainly be better and even cheaper. More information about that soon.

Thanks a lot for your support.

after this update can anyone confirm that igps360 or igpsd+holux are now working with software like sygic or navigon on the 2g iphone? i’m just waiting for some confirmation to buy a gps antenna for my baby :) really dont have money to buy a 3g :)

  2. smoghat says:

is there a chance you will release xgps on the app store? it’s such a great program

  3. Delgado says:

Still doens’t work for anyhting but Xgps on 1g with iGPS360.

  4. Mathieu says:

Yes xGPS will be on the AppStore.

  5. Mathieu (un autre) says:

Hi there, is gps serial working with navigon? i have a gps360 on my V1 and I want to be sure before i download navigon…

    thx

  6. JJ says:

Just went to work in the morning and looks like the navigon now is working fine and the ida also. I used the 1g iphone with igps360. Will test it more on friday :-) . But good work.

  7. JFH says:

    iPhone V1 OS 3.0 + igps360 + GPSSerial + Navigon = OK !

    Thx

    JF

  8. Delgado says:

JFH> Could you describe in detail how you go about doing it. Settings and all.

  9. xjust says:

igpsd still doesnt seem to work with navigon/motion-x gps with gpsslim236 even on this new version of gps-serial (1.1). please please fix. only navigon got great maps in my country -)

  10. incom2 says:

    Excellent work, congratulations!!

Using iPhone first generation, with 2.2 OS version: serial GPS works with xGPS but speed is not measured (most of time at 0 km/h and sometimes high values and 0 again). Positioning on the map seems to work OK with SerialGPS 1.1, I will test more and using some AppStore application.

  11. Peter says:

Incom2> I fail to see how it can be excellent work that xgps works since this app works just fine without gpsserial. As of right now I personally have zero things working with gpsserial other than xgps rendering gpsserial absolutely 100% useless to me :(

I’m not trying to be ungrateful or anything I’m just disappointed as I would have liked to be able to use other gps apps especially Navigon.

  12. Stefan says:

But still GPSSerial is real and close to be working for everyone, and i think with some active debugging this will work perfect. I really hope that the developers take the time to get some debug logs or whatever is needed to find the last bugs.

  13. Gus says:

Any chance for a connection between ipod touch 2g and holux bt gps via bluetooth ???

  14. Gus says:

I´ve allready looked every place on web for such a bluetooth connection but until the moment the only option is the igpsd cable. Does anyone have some new info about this??

  15. billy says:

    Good work!
Can you update the link in xgps official site for GPSSettings 1.1? please!
    TY!!

  16. JJ says:

So I msut say that the igps360 works perfect with navigon :-) … Now I really love my iPhone 1. gen. And you are cool guys. good work

  17. Dom says:

xGPS still fully unresponsive. The blue position arrow does appear, but no movement of map or any response to any button presses.

  18. JJ says:

and did you set up in the xgps the gps module to iphone gps, because you need to do that you you installed the gpsserial.

One thing that does not show in navigon with the igps360 is the speed :-( .

  19. MrFX says:

How can i disable GPSSerial to get my remote with the Universal Dock working? Can you add a Toggle to SBSettings?

I’ve successfully tested GPSSerial with MobileNavigator on a Touch 2G connected with a serial line to Windows XP running a NMEA-Simulator.

Now i have to buy a GPS mouse with serial output.

Hope this is possible with Bluetooth soon.

  20. Renato says:

Works great on Navigon, just perfect! for some reason it still shows heavy delay with Sygic app, I don’t understand if it’s gpsserial’s fault or navigator’s… Anyway thank you for your great job, I’m really happy I bought this xgps module, works great on my 2g… only thing left to fix is the sound, which only comes from headset, and the speed which is not shown, but I’m already satisfied… Looking forward to see xgps on appstore!

  21. Dom says:

JJ, GPS does work flawlessly inside xGPS (and yes, I did set it up for iPhone GPS). The blue arrow is correctly positioned and does move, but the trouble is that the xGPS interface has become unresponsive.
Anyhow, am upgrading to 3.0 now and will see if that changes anything.

  22. Zedan says:

I made my own cable for the holux module from the chematic found on the internet … how can I connect xgps to them or gpsserial … using the IGPSD profile reequires a serial … how can I connect without a serial….?? sorry for going semi off topic…

  23. tribal says:

So Gps serial seems to stress the battery without using any GPS Device…
    I’m on 3.0 on a iphone 2G…
Maybe you can implement a switch of button?

  24. MrFX says:

    @Zedan
Try it with the xGPS-Setting… my NMEA-Simulator works with this.

  25. gtiguy says:

Great work and thanks xGPS team just tested your apps today
My system: ipod touch 2g JB 3.0
    GPS: i360GPS (Orange Gadgets)
    Running xGPS Ver 1.2.7
    Running GPSSerial 1.1
Tested with many free GPS apps from app store all found to be working well except for one called compass.
xGPS works well except for speed keeps dropping in and out but seems accurate
Seems to suck down the battery pretty quickly?
Get some off line routing and offline route recalculation an you certainly have a winner! Happy to pay some $$$ for an official app.

  26. Ian says:

One question about the AppStore release… Will this have a monthly fee? I find it so stupid to have to pay this when a normal GPS device does not charge one.

  27. Mathieu says:

No there will be no monthly fees. You buy the app, that’s it.

  28. nicklas says:

Will GPSSerial ever support gpsd ? (http://gpsd.berlios.de/)

I have a wireless AP in my car with a gps connected to it and running gpsd.
It would be really sweet to connect my ipod to that so when I’m in the car I could use it to navigate or when I’m not in the car I could connect to it over the internet to see where the car is ;)

  29. Chris says:

I cannot get navigon to work… I have 2g iPhone running OS 3, gpsserial 1.1 and igps360. Xgs works fine of course, but navigon(UK) doesn’t pick up the gps co-ordinates. I have tried re-installing gpsserial and navigon. Changing gpsserial settings, starting and plugging/unplugging the igps360 in different orders, but nothing makes a difference. Igps360 led is showing a positive sattelite lock, but the info is not reaching the navigon app.
    Any ideas here?
I see in other posts that it just seems to work for some, and yet others like me are struggling to no avail.
Any hints, tips or feedback on this would be very much appreciated….
    Thanks.
    Chris

  30. Mathew says:

    Hi,

I have exactly the same problem, 2g iPhone running OS3, gps serial 1.1 and igps 360. The only Appstore app that works for me is Runkeeper Pro, all the other don’t get any gps signal…
I’ve tried everything like Chris to make Navigon work. Still nothing.

Can someone help the rest of us who can’t get it to work??

    Thanks

    Mathew

  31. Reinhard says:

Using an iPod Touch 1G with OS 3.0 JB, I am unhappy that I cannot use my mic any more after installing GPSSerial — no VOIP, no voice recording. After removing GPSSerial, it works again. Can you please fix this?

    Thanks,
    Reinhard

  32. Stefan says:

Installed Navigon and GPSSerial on a 2G running 3.0. Works almost perfect. The only problem is that sometimes the GPS thinks that the car turns or that i’m running on a parallelll street. Can be anoying with all the directions and turns that Navigon think i should do to get back on track. After a few seconds it gets back on the road i’m driving. Don’t know if it is something that could be tweaked in the next release of GPSSerial, or maybe Navigon needs a new release.

  33. Sotos says:

Navigon + igpsd cable with holux gps reciever works …same problem as stefan mentioned but it worls pretty good.

  34. Jay says:

Just wondering if people who have already donated towards this app will also have to pay when the new version is released?

  35. tribal says:

Works fine with Navigon and Igps 360….

  36. olahaye74 says:

    Few questions about features.

I’ve been searching around xgps web site and was unable to find answers to my questions.
    - Will xGPS support OpenStreetMap navigation?
    - if yes, will it be able to record a track when driving on roads that are not present in the map and upload it to the OSM server?
    - is there an autozoom feature: 2Km, 1Km, 500m 200m, 100m.
if a direction change is far by 1km, then display a 2Km wide bounding box, then when you’re about 500m before the turn, switch to a 1Km bounding box, then smaler and smaller bounding box (bigger zoom) when you aproach the turn. (just like ALK CoPilot (and maybe other PND))

  37. Abel says:

Am I the only one to complain about the actual speaking part of this app? For one, it’s faint and can barely be heard at max volume. But mainly, it speaks as a strict text to speech program instead of a mapping speech program – it reads highway numbers as long form (114 becomes one hundred fourteen, FM 1382 becomes one thousand three hundred eighty-two), and road abbreviations as letters (FWY should be freeway).

  38. Darrick says:

Just installed GPSSerial and confirmed it works with MotionX-GPS using igpsd cable and Holux GPS.

  39. PmgR says:

Has anyone tried Navigon North America on an iPhone 2G or iPod Touch with the iGPS360 and GPSSerial?

  40. mark says:

I have gpsserial installed and the orange gadgets gps all on a 2G iPhone. The “google maps” app does not pick up the location from the gps.

Is this normal?? or should it work?

The gps, gpsserial and xgps all work fine. looking forward to the updates!

    thanks

  41. randall says:

i do wish you would put the 2.0 release on Cydia, thus lending your support to those of us feel we should be able to jailbreak our iphones and use them as we see fit. the appstore is about censorship and control which is not what i viewed xGPS being a part of. i never would have donated to help support development if i had known becoming part of apple was your goal.

  42. joey says:

    It was nice

  43. Chris says:

So if the next-gen version of xgps is going to be even better than the stuff available, does that mean it’ll support avoiding toll roads?

  44. Ming says:

    @Sotos,

How do u get it to work IGPSD cable with Holux and Navigon?
What do u select in GPSSerial App?

    Thanks

  45. Tribal says:

On Navigon the Speedometer don’t work anytime, same on Sygic and on XGps
Is it possible to fix this Bug?
All in all I’m happy that it brings GPS on a 2G
    I’m running it with I GPS 360
    Thanks for your work

  46. Tim says:

Any hopes of using my g-stat bluetooth gps receiver with this?

  47. Ian says:

Hey, any news for us on the next version of xGPS? It’s been a while.

Also, I don’t know if it’s possible or not, but does the SDK allow you to lower the volume of music that’s being played so you can hear the voice if you have the iPhone hooked up to your stereo?

  48. Mathieu says:

We will give some news on the end of this week. Stay updated.

  49. gbo says:

Ipod touch 2g with 3.0 FW with iGPSD cable and Holux M1200 yields nothing. GPSSerial set to iGPSD. Locations services set to ‘On.’ Google Maps, Navigon, and xGPS do not show any sign of GPS data.

Holux is sending good GPS data, based on a bluetooth connection to it.

    Any ideas?

  50. Ilse says:

    Iphone 2G + fw 3.0 + GPSSerial + iGPS360
    During my test with xGPS:
Speed and Altimeter (on properties of GPS) are in continous change.

    Other programs ….
    Navigon KO (complete and light)
Sygic Europe and NAM OK (speed constantly a 0Km/h)
    Navionics OK
    GPSies OK
    AroundMe OK

With maps.app anything appear i know, but if you launch AroundMe and search for example a near hotel and then you request the road to goal in, AroundMe can give the perfect position to start from into maps.app! This may be is helpful for correct setup of GPSSerial with maps.app too.
