xGPS 1.2 Released

xGPS 1.2 ScreenshotEverybody would say: Finally! Yes, xGPS 1.2 has been released. The version has been sent to the MMI repository and will be available within some hours. It should be in everybody’s Cydia as the MMI repository is installed by default. Just do a refresh within some hours and xGPS should pop up.

This version of xGPS has required us a lot of hours of work. We have tried to bring the most advanced and stable navigation software for the iPhone / iPod touch. However, even if we have made our best, you have to keep in mind that this software is free but not bug free. If you experience such a bug feel free to ask in the forum but do not say “It doesn’t work, it’s crappy”.

New Features

xGPS 1.2 Screenshot 2A lot of new features have been added. We will not re-enumerate them again. You can find an exhaustive list in the previous pre-release post. One thing which hasn’t been mentioned is a new way to create itinerary called “Routes manager”. Using this function you can compute and save routes for offline use. It let you choose places and addresses as starting and ending point. Please notice that there is currently no support for routes with more than one starting and one ending points. It’s due to a Google limitation and we are working on it.

The new major improvement in this version is the voice instructions support. It uses a Text-To-Speech engine to convert text instructions to sound. So there is no way to change the voice yourself as it is not pre-recorded sound. We are working on a cleaner English voice which should be included in the subsequent releases.

Also please note that this version will delete any existing downloaded maps on your device .

xGPS Manager

A new version of xGPS manager is also released. It has been rewritten from scratch and should be more user-friendly and self-explanatory. It is available for Mac OS X and Windows. For Windows users, you should have the Java system installed. Be sure to have it installed (you can download it at the Java Sun Website) before installing xGPS Manager. The manager can be downloaded from the official xGPS website.

Official xGPS Website

xGPS Manager 1.0 ScreenshotA website for the project has also been developed. It is still in hard development and the only thing available now is the ability to download xGPS Manager. We want also to inform you that we are experiencing some servers problems and are making our best to solve them. That’s why the websites sometimes become unavailable.

Logo

We have also chosen one of the proposed logo. We would like to thank you all for your ideas and creations. It was very difficult to choose. The creator of the logo (which can be seen in the blog header) is: dna75. A big thanks to him!

Acknowledgements

We would like to thank all of you for your support and interest. Without you this project would not be in the state as it is today. We would like to restate that donations are still welcomed and allow us to offer xGPS for free and to afford servers costs. We would also to thank Thomas Heben and Fabio who are managing and answering all the questions of the forum, and even more! Thank you guys! Thanks go also to all the translators of xGPS. Thanks to them the project is translated in almost 25 languages! Impressive! Thanks go also to Demis Balbach for the amazing design of the website. Thanks also to ModMyI to host our project in their Cydia repository. Finally we would to thank you all the people we forgot to mention (sorry for that!). Without you this project would die.

One more thing…

As people always want to know the future. We will release and intermediate version some weeks later to fix translation problems which could have been occured and also minor bug fixes. You can still find exactly what is going to be fixed in subsequent releases by checking the TRAC website.

I don’t have a mobile Internet subscription. Is there any way I can download or compute my directions without an Internet connection???? Gmap does this but it doesn’t have voice capability.

  2. Min Park says:

you guys should get paid as soon as you make it stable … it rocks

    few issues to mention

    – xGPS map manager randomly stops downloading and stop working. ( It still downloads & stacks maps up to where progress bar is stopped) So the downloading never finished well ( tested on 3 different machine, OS X, Win Vista, Win XP )

    – xGPS randomly crashing while driving which is very annoying.

There’s a couple of suggestion that I would like to make:

    1) Simplified the voice command like the one Mapking use. I find it hard to concentrate what the voice command said because the instruction is too long.

    2) It would be great if you can put a function where user can add their own POI into the offline map either by coordinate or address or finding it on the map itself.

    3) I also find it a bit annoying because google map is a bit off because i find that a lot of the time my coordinate will show that I’m off the map and it will give me a wrong direction. Even when I’m in the right direction, but if the arrow points to the different direction it will gave a wrong way. I hope it can be less sensitive.

On the positive note. The xGPS software (took less than 10 sec) can captured GPS signal much faster than Mapking or Garmin XT Mobile (took at least 1 minute to lock signal) and the map is very detailed.

That’s just my opinion. Anyway I think this software rocks and much cooler than anything else in the market because its free.

One more thing that I’d like to see, (which would be useful for people without a data plan and people going through poor coverage areas), would be that when planning a route, it gives an option to get the map tiles to cover the route. For example, I have downloaded the maps for where I usually drive, but last weekend I needed to drive a few hundred miles, so entered my destination and set off. xGPS did a great job of downloading the map as I drove, but in some areas there was no signal, and so the map couldn’t be displayed. Perhaps an option for either downloading the map before leaving, or downloading as much as it can (rather than just the area that’s just ahead) would be good?

    Hi,

Really great job, thank you !

With the release of apps like “iBluetooth”, is there a chance that the iPhoneV1 could connect to a bluetooth gps device in near future ?

So I could recycle the Tomtom’s gps receiver I used with my ‘old’ smartphone running Tomtom on WM5 :-)

you guys rock, i didnt download it yet but the sheer effort and dedication you guys put in it is worthy of many praises (and riches! get paid already!)

Great product. been using for about a week, and though it has some bugs, it works great. The issue I’m having is as of yesterday, I can’t get “good” GPS reception, it’s only showing poor. So it’s having trouble keeping up with the route, making it unusable. Has anyone else had this problem, and, if so, how did you fix it?

    Thanks

  10. Dave Pruett says:

This is the best iPhone 3G GPS software on the market. Could you please comment on the following?
    1. How do you change the voice to give directions in feet instead of meters. I live in the U.S. and we’re not fully into meters here.
    2. Are you going to have additional options for changing the voice style, maybe a woman?
    3. Shorter and closer together directions would be nice.
None of what I have said above is to be taken as a negative feedback. This app is great and head and shoulders above the competition. I recommend xGPS to everyone.

    Thank You

  11. Henry says:

Speed limit indication and warning instead of radar warning would be a more sensible thing. Plus radar warning is illegal in germany.

  12. Alecwebpa says:

I love the app and can’t imagine the time and effort you guys must have put into this thing. The only question I have is – Will xgps ever be able to create routes “offline” (ipod touch user with gps360 unit). I rarely use my gps from home to location. It is far more common to use GPS from unknow A to uknown B on the road. I would be happy to pay $30+ for an app that could do offline routing.

  13. Herbert says:

….it’s crappy….sorry, I have to get it out, I have no wifi after I installed this program on my iphone, my wifi will start but will not connect to any network, it’s stuck and married to 3G…regarding the program, it’s a nice exercise but the interface and the settings menu still too messy, if the software ask for my address I hope it will start to navigate from that point or either load the maps of my current location the way a GPS will do, like the google maps native app in the phone, again, it’s a good exercise that hopefully will have a good resolution but for now I have to spent another day reloading OS, jailbreaking, yellosnowing, installing and reinstalling apps…. >.< …..

  14. Mike says:

What do I have to download to my iPhone ?
Only maps through the xGPS manager ?
I can’t find the xGPS iPhone application somewhere for download here

    Thanks

  15. Rommey says:

    Hey erb,

re download the app again. …and guess what erb, you’re the only one on the whole planet that seems to be whining about 3g wiping out wifi. Just reload the app again. Should work fine. Btw it’s not crappy. It’s an awesome work in PROGRESS!!!!

  16. Sniperx says:

JP guys, zoom into the max level on google maps then zoom into the max level on Xgps maps, do you see the same difference in zoom levels that I do?

Also, can we downgrade back to the older version, I’m afraid if I can’t get maps via manager, this is pretty useless at this time.

  17. Alexander says:

One more suggestion would be to avoid Toll Roads if possible. I could not find that in any of the options menu.

Thanks again for the awesome work. I give mad props to the DEV team creating such great work.

  18. Jay P says:

You guys have a great product here. I have my iphone downloading maps as i type this … hope this works !

    thanks.

Great because i dont have a data plan so i can download my maps on Wifi before i leave on a trip.

  20. joey says:

Great app…but what’s the future of xgps now turn by turn gps apps will be allowed into the appstore??? Can it compete with the likes of tomtom/sygic?

  21. Ian says:

Hi all I have jailbroken my iphone 16 g 3G and installed xgps it seems to work ok but i cannot get it to give voice commands and maybe this had has something to do with that it will not show my directions. It knows my position and speed but thats all. Any help ?

  22. Joe says:

Can you talk on the iphone simantaneously while in GPS mode?

  23. diegold says:

Just got the gps360 module and it works with xgps just fine. I am in Argentina though and can’t get driving directions to work, even though addresses are found without any problems. Which countries are suitable for driving directions ?

  24. Dhruv says:

Voice command does not work in India (New Delhi) – even after you select English as the language in Settings. Map loads only partially while driving… Shouldn’t voice command work in India? I have downloaded the map for Delhi & NCR region.

Its a great application. Indeed the one iphone users were waiting from long time. A gps application with offline maps support.
Though developers have done their work, but google does not allow to donwload the maps . I tried to download the map of my area using xGPS manager but each time it does not go above 4-6 % and this is because google does not allow this and blacklist my ip.and after that i can not access google maps in my browser.google maps opens up but does not displays the map.
    Does any one have solution.

  27. Tomas says:

The MD5 Checksum is incorrect when trying to download it from Cydia – I have tried over hte last couple of days.
Is that something for here or should I post elsewhere?

  28. Tomas says:

    Right

Now been able to download the software but it refuses to recognise the GPS and I never get a signal. very odd

  29. conal says:

can anyone tell me where to find the maps once they are downloaded, my computer doesn’t have wifi so i need to bring them to one that does to ssh them into my iphone

  30. trient says:

What about being able to use GMDL maps in 1.2+?

  31. dan says:

I have been using this app since this version came out, virtually every day. This free piece of software is already better than some of the commercial ones I have used in the past.

here are a couple of bugs, but this product is amazing. The routes manager is obviously not quite perfected and if you make a wrong turn it is better to find your way back to the predicted route, then let t recalculate.

Still these are very minor points, This software is worth paying for in it’s current state. It is the best driving aid ever developed for the iphone.

  32. ikb says:

“What about being able to use GMDL maps in 1.2+?”

or improving Map Manager to work with other map standards like Open Street or Yahoo maps for that matter?

Yhea, i’m having the same Md5 checksum error while trying to download this software. If anyone has any ideas on that, would appreciate it.

  38. Stanley Czyzyk says:

    HOW DO I:

Search for a location, choose a entry from the results…THEN route from my current GPS location to that place?

  39. Mathieu says:

You cannot think that way. You have to use the Driving directions feature then for the “From” field use the current position feature and in the to field put your destination address.

  40. Gidi says:

    Hi
I use XGPS in my country.
after flying abroad the gps position stucks at the last position it was in my origin country.
    Reset the GPS doesn’t work.
    any suggestion?

  41. iMig says:

    @Gidi,

I had the same problem just yesterday. Tried resetting the GPS and rebooting the phone but didn’t work. Then I installed the last updates from Cydia (SBSettings and xGPS) it just worked again.

Some people say that disabling the autolock, setting it to never, could also work. Afterwards you can enable the autolock again. Other possible solutions I saw googling around were setting date and time manually to the correct values, and resetting the iphone network settings. Hope that helps.

Hi, have you ever considered using Garmin Maps with this software…. i love this program, i don;t use it much because it requires a lot of pre-work…but if it had garming maps, you could do whatever whenever, find points and that stuff..

so have you considered adapting it for Garmin Maps????

  46. Willis Wilson says:

I’ve installed n worked on xGPS, Amazing program really helps in cuttin down the bandwidth with ur provider , I have used it in middle east n in oman n has worked flawlessly… map downloadin is a great use which helps u to work it offline.i have not tried it at all places for those who think gps is not workin all u have to do is to somehow connect it wirelessly (only once) to locate ur initial position … after that u can use the GPS without the wireless..

  48. Matt B says:

This program is great. Just wish for a few things, and I know I’m not the only one, but just wanted to post them,

    Cleaner Voice
    Louder Sound
    Estimated Time of Arrival
Ability to look ahead on route before getting there (seeing entire route at once, in either text or map format)

Aside from these things, I think the program is excellent.
Thanks for all your hard and great work to bring a great program to the iPhone.

  49. Asaad says:

Hi thank you so much for the program, I live in Lebanon
I have downloaded the xgps i can use it just to see where i am when offline and it is working great but i want to add my predefined routs, the rout manager for windows when clicking on it is saying:
the feature is not yet implemented.
is that correct or i am missing something?
I need to draw a rout on the map that i have to follow on my iPhone is that possible and if yes how?
