Release date

To cut off all the rumors and to answer all the questions, we have decided to post a little update on the release date for the version 1.2 of xGPS.

The current developement version of xGPS has almost all the required features to be released. We are correcting all the remaining bugs. This task should be finished by the end of this week (28.02.2009).
Then the translation tasks have to begin to reflect the changes of the 1.2 version.
When these two remaining tasks will be done, xGPS will be released. We think we are able to release xGPS 1.2 on the 7th of March. However, as usual, this is an approximative date and it can change if majors bugs are discovered.

Thank you all for your support and interest.

Looking forward to the newest release. Don’t know if you are aware or not yet but in the current Beta, in the U.S. I cannot plot a route even with fixed locations.

  5. Richard says:

Is good to have an estmated date at least, so I don’t have to reload this blog 20 times a day :) .
Take your time guys, we know that you want to do the best of this awesome app.

I’m looking forward to try xGPS 1.2!

  6. 3d Designer says:

Thanks for the update guys! :)

  7. Me says:

    Hi there,

I’m really looking forward to the 1.2 version. But for the people who want the app only in english, can’t you release an English-only version before translating (so by the 28th or maybe even before that)?

I would really appreciate that since I need the app bij the end of this week.

Thanks in advance! And no biggy if you cannot do that;)

  8. NK123 says:

Not to be a pain in the arse or anything but what is the point of this project? GPS software is starting to popup the appstore

I think the Xroad GPS looks pretty promising and they are already releasing a Euro Version Q1 2009
    http://www.xroadgps.com/Maps/GMapforiPhone/tabid/2463/Default.aspx

I’ve been using Xgps since January but the one from xroad looks really promising.

  9. Q says:

    To NK123:

That’s IF they don’t pull it (like netshare).

Not to mention this one is the alternative , especially for those with ipod touch. (i have an iPhone 3G)

There might also be the issue of price …this is probably going to be cheaper even if they start charging for it , witch is fine of course.

And as a bonus , this is worldwide and uses google maps (constantly updated) no payment for new maps every year … etc.. etc…

  10. Yeah, but what do you pay at the apple store?

Thanks for letting people who what to expect, when. Good luck! So far, I love what I see of 1.1.

  11. severe says:

G-Maps is terrible. Give it a go, NK123. Though the UI isn’t too bad, there’s no voice, no landscape mode, etc. I often used Google Maps in it’s place, for it’s ability to do much of the same (and more) trouble free and on the fly.

As an early adopter of G-Map for the iPhone, xGPS has been the most promising GPS app I’ve seen (in actual development), despite what it’s been lacking. Straight from the start I could sense xGPS was on the right track.

Of course, I could be all wrong. ;) We’ll see in a couple of weeks.

    Just my .02

  12. Shhas says:

I have been following this in the past couple of weeks. Maybe I’m missing something here and please correct me if I’m wrong but with XGPS you “always” need pretty solid 3G connection to get a live feed of google maps. If you happen to be driving in spotty coverage areas or in areas where there is no reliable mobile coverage, XGPS will not work. On the other hand, G-map has the entire map loaded on the iphone and it works with zero data connection as long as your phone can see the satellite. Now, if XGPS had the ability to have the entire country loaded then G-map loses all its advantage (I don’t see that happening as XGPS probably will not have adequate money to buy license for maps from major mobile map companies).

  13. TTT says:

I just started using xgps since 2 days ago. I Like it alot. To shhas, I think that’s why xgps allows user to download map to the device. Maybe I am wrong becoz I am still discoverig this app

  14. Richo says:

Thanks for the update! Previous version works well down here is Oz.

  15. Gabo says:

    So wait We! Thx guys!!

  16. Fabster says:

I’ve been anticipating the release of 1.2 ever since the beta version has come out and I am very proud that someone has actually been able to beat Apple to the punch and bring out a software that is easy, reliable and free…the AppStore will grossly exagerate the price as they will try to compete with TomTom and all other GPS programs..thanks guys.

  17. Cne80 says:

I have aproblem with XGPS… the gps signal is always poor and the map and route is not updating even i am on the move. Please advice.

Thanks for the great work guys!!
just one question, will we be able to donwload the whole map of europe for example and work with it offline? if so, how many Mbs will weigh?

    Many thanks for all !

  23. Thomas says:

Thank you for the update. There’s nothing worse than waiting in a vacuum (of knowledge).

  24. brown says:

That’s quite a delay. It will be very intereseting to see if there’s still at need for this software in two weeks, or Xraod has run off with all the glory. Hope you really have thought this thing through…

  25. Fable says:

@Shhas, XGPS has a map manager so you can download as many maps as you want And at different zoom levels, this means you can almost certainly use it without a connection, but don’t quote me.

  26. Maxime says:

Indeed, the maps can be downloaded and be used offline. I don’t use 3G or Edge and I can perfectly travel offline using GPS connection.
The only problem I noticed is you cannot compute the itinerary when in offline mode. To do that, I need to be connected with Wifi before starting the trip.

  27. david says:

i dont understand about donwloaded maps …. if i want the whole germany for example, should i download it at diff zoom levels? if i download the whole country in a loe zoom level will the soft work? if i need to donwload it in dif levels of zoom that will take a lot of gbs dont you think … could we just download the maps as Xroads for US ? (it weighs 900 bms)

sorry to disturb but i dont understand this point at all

    many thanks

  28. mm2ha says:

I was just wondering if there is a way how to download the beta…I have the previous version and I have been waiting for the new one, but I will be going on a long trip in the next few days and I could definitely use the functions that I have read are already included in the beta version. Thanks for the help!

  29. Steven Campbell says:

well I also cannot see why you wouldn’t release English first and other languages later.

if the app were paid I could see the logic in it.
I don’t think microsodt released dos back in the day with a ton of languages on day one as the core audience was American… google as well started in English.

using xroad now and I can say it works well fir me in las vegas however no voice… but that is all it lacks.

by the time this launches there may be another turn by turn in the app store.

again I want to reiterate that for so e of us we really WANT TO SUPPORT YOU and are in need if gps too… that’s why we compliain about this be like localizations etc… they are secondary or even terciary to the project as we see it.

I’m one of these guys who could get the app store stuff free if he wanted to but is willing to donate/pay for this…

  30. almanzarj says:

thanks for the update! looking forward to it

  31. Johnny says:

I’d love to see an early English only version around the 28th if that was possible.
I’m also in the camp of being prepared to donate to support this project – and this from a guy who gets cracks and keygens for everything.
I’m most impressed with the level of communication and followup from the obviously small development team.
Well done guys – so how about an early English only release?
    Jonny

  32. Steven says:

The thing with xroad is that it doesnt have voice navigation and it doesnt support many countries so i cant even try it. The app that im really hoping gets let into the appstore is the gps app from Sygic, it uses tomtoms maps and looks really nice and polished, alot like a real gps navigator. If this gets accepted i don’t see a very bright future for xgps

Im still really looking forward to 1.2 and testing out the voice navigation

  33. Justin says:

Hey I can’t seem to get the driving directions in Canada?? Is the new update going to work in Canada?

    Thanks

  34. Matthew Rhodes says:

Fantastic work I really want you guys to come out on top and be the software of choice for iPhone and possibly mobile gps. The one huge problem I see is the map options, xgps currently downloads at all levels which can make a small area huge in mb. I hope 1.2 allows us to dl at a selected zoom level or you guys can provide a resource to dl maps or add support to read tom tom maps.

Less of the negatives though this really is sterling work and I hope when your done developing this you charge a small fee as this app deserves it, I’d suggest a small fee with the option the donate more.

  35. Petoria says:

I agree with “Me”, “Steven Campbell” and “Matthew Rhodes” in that it would be nice to have an English-only version prior to performing translations. Would it not be possible to release the English version then release a multi-lingual add-on or separate version?

I think this is a fantastic app, and the team deserves tons of credit, but speaking for myself, I believe that there are a lot of English speaking people that are anxiously checking this page and Cydia to see when 1.2 will be released, and if you already have it working by the 28th, why not give the people what they want?

  36. [...] sito di xGPS si aprrende che a breve verra’ rilasciato un nuovo update del programma xGPS disponibile in [...]

  37. fabiosoft says:

in iphoneitalia blog there is a my comment about some doubts abot xgps 1.2

  38. Steven Campbell says:

I think saurik said on in a letter he sent to the us copyright office that cydia (saurik is then inventor of cydia) is installed on 1.6 MILLION phones in the united states ALONE

More food for thought on launching that English only version.

bear this in mind… I work in vegas and ppl from these countries are either englsh first language or have a LARGE ammount of fluid English speakers:

    -usa
    -Canada
    -England
    -Ireland
    -scottland
    -Philippines
-most german speaking (Dutch) countries as they teach in English only in many of them such as Germany
    -sweeden
    -Finland

and many more places where English is prominent and spoken by many who can enjoy xgps until someone localizes it for them!

  39. John D says:

If you guys get voice and route corrections working, you’ll have one of the most popular apps on earth. I have a $25 donation waiting to send you. Good luck. Can’t wait to use the new xgps release.

  40. Vlad says:

cannot wait for 1.2 to be released! English sooner would be nice.
Love the download feature, iPhone without data plan… thanks!

  41. John says:

Thank you for the statusupdate. Looking forward to your new release.

Will the be an update dor the mapmanager too? I like to navigate oflline, but it seems that downloading larger maps (+ 1 Gb) always leeds to errormessage.

  42. Stefan says:

Some people (Steven Campbell, Matthew Rhodes, Petoria…) request a earlier release without localization; I think leaving out the translations would not affect the release date too much, as you miss that in the same time bugfixing is also done. Without that additional time the chance to release too early a buggy software is quite high.

  43. Petoria says:

Stefan, the update specifically states that bug fixing should be comleted by the 28th. Then the translations will start after that.

  44. Steven Campbell says:

meaning that on fen 28 we could all be using 1.2 in english.

  45. Siriuspapa says:

    Hy mates,

I’m from Hungary. I respect your work and wish much energy to finish this project perfectly. In my opinion you are on the best way to do. I use your software offline, and plan a root by wifi. It works well, so i respect You. Thx u all :)

  46. Adrian says:

Will we be able tto download offline maps from openstreet too in the new version?

  47. Rob says:

    It looks awsome can’t wait!
I noticed the voice says R.D instead of Road im guessing that’s just how its gonna be?

  48. Brock says:

This is amazing, can’t wait, I’ll be donating

  49. afan says:

Thanks for the update! Can’t wait for this to be available! I jailbroke my phone JUST for this app! Keep it up!
