Pre-Release Write Up

As most of you now know, from the videos posted on iPhoneFreakz and on the ModMyI’s article, yes 1.2 is in its beta stage, and in a dead sprint for the finish line. We here at xGPS are now taking the time to post an official release of the new features, abilities, fixes, and updates coming in this new release of the xGPS Navigation Application for the iPhone Platform.

The previous version of xGPS was a GPS navigation program allowing what iPhone users really wanted out of their iPhone, realtime GPS navigation. So what have we improved upon from the last version? What have we fixed you ask? Well:

  • Bookmarks for saved directions now work correctly. Save all the bookmarks you want in an improved way.
  • GPX logging now works correctly. Save GPX data into multiple logs. Logs will be saved per calculated trips, and now adds the proper end carriage. Go ahead, track yourself and improve open maps!
  • Current Location and Recompute Itinerary now work correctly. For those areas where it didnt work before, i.e. USA, your location status now works. There is no more “you have to have a hard address”. Plot your destination and roll out.
  • Wrong Way indicator can now be hidden, should you feel adventurous during your routing, or need to make an extra stop!
  • Map Manager on the iPhone Stability.
  • Overall program stability and performance upgrades.

For all the updates, improvements, and fixes that have been included into this release, there have also, and probably the most exciting, been some expansion of the xGPS Program! What’s new to xGPS this time around?…:

  • Wireless Transfer of your map files. No longer do you have to dig around your iPhones directory to find your map file or put it in the right place. Simply download your maps from your computer and wirelessly push them to the xGPS program on your iPhone. It’s that easy!
  • Google Terrain Maps are now supported and added as another option for maps. All your hikers, bikers, and adventurers can enjoy this!
  • GPS Information. Access your GPS’s Lat/Long specs as well as Altitude and Speed of your unit and sent it by email.
  • English Voice instructions are now supported. Now included is the ability to receive verbal commands on your next turn as you approach it.
  • Night Mode for all you road warriors traveling across the country all all hours of the night! A new, easy view for the eyes when driving at night!
  • Access your GPX traces on your computer using a normal web-browser using the Wireless Transfer feature.

The xGPS Maps Manager has also new name: xGPS Manager. With a new name, a new software. The manage has thus been rewritten from scratch and now includes those new exciting new features:

  • Name your map sections and keep them organized. When downloading maps you can now name each region, allowing you to know what you downloaded, at what zoom levels, and its size.
  • Ability to download multiple zoom levels at a time now added.
  • Keep drawn region outline when download of map is finished, should you want to download another zoom level or Terrain Maps of the same region!
  • Option to show regions already downloaded.
  • Google Terrain Maps is now supported.
  • Wirelessly push and retrieve your device maps.
  • Manage and sync GPX Routes from your iPhone/Computer and show them plotted on a map.

As you can see, a lot has gone into the next installment of the xGPS iPhone Application! We here at Xwaves are trying to give you the most complete and user friendly mappin solution for your iPhone.

As always, we couldn’t do this without you guys, our community. We want to thank you all for your support, input, and debugging of the xGPS software!

We are all excited about this new release and you guys should be too. We are bringing a lot to the table and setting the bar higher and higher for future releases.

The planned release for xGPS 1.2 is for the end of this month. We don’t to communicate a more accurate date as we simply don’t know it.  So keep your calendars marked, and stay tuned! And as always you can find the xGPS Software on the ModMyI repo’s (already included with any jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch).

  4. BrianCO says:

    xgps fan-
I don’t think so. If you check out this blog they are talking about the ability to use other programs with the gps360…http://iphone-gps.blogspot.com/

  5. Quoc Huy says:

    Wonderful app!
    Thanks for that.
One thing I’d love but I guess it’s tough is the 3D view.

  6. otai says:

Xgps 1.2 will not be release today? :(

  7. Sebastian says:

How do you know this? Where do you get your information from?

  8. fabiosoft says:

“Sorry for the delays but we want to include some feature which are really necessary for this release so it will delay up the release.”

  9. Sebastian says:

Any new ETA, next few days or within the next weeks or months?

  10. Nathan says:

It will be released before March 9th. There are only 11 more things to add or fix

  11. Steven c says:

yeah yeah yeah… like I said before, I am willing to purchase the software. there is one alternative on the app store but it does not call out the turns. I may “test” it before I consider buying it…

but I really want to support THIS project guys!

  12. BrianCO says:

The app store app G-West is nothing like the true guts of this project, nothing

  13. Mike says:

Can anyone give a quick rundown between the new appstore app g-map (ver. 1.2) and this app (version 1.2 also)?

  14. Rodrigo Santos says:

Just Perfect!!!!! The only bad thing is the fact that the up date is not coming today (20th of feb ) ;(
    Great job guys!

  15. Good work guys. Really looking forward to this app. Don’t sweat the delay, when you announce a release it at least makes a target for you.

  16. Cleber Cesario says:

I’d like to know about a Portuguese translation for XGPS!

  17. Rodrigo says:

Hi, Why driving directions doesn’t works in Brazil’s maps?
    Thank you.

  18. AN says:

voice prompts, even basic are a safety necessity. As is smoothing the lag/skip delays in iPhone3g gps.

as one who has tried small screen gps maps before when driving it has increased my near accident percentage greatly and this is not good. It does no good to have to squint at a tiny map at a criticical juncture in a route in traffic. All map only non voice prompt gps units should be banned in every country as is most places now for testing on mobiles while drcing and some place talking on mobile while driving.

  19. Hachiboi says:

Great work guys, can’t wait to see the new vesion. Better to spend some extra time and get it working well, then release a vesion that is not up to scratch. Hope everyone understands that.

  20. Kristian JP says:

Hi, Why driving directions doesn’t works in Japan’s maps?
    Thank´s

  21. iCs says:

Hurry up I’m need xGPS 1.2

Well done guys, this is an amazing application – and any moaners, just remember this is 100% free. Like all of us – waiting for update with anticipation. Ya have my donation, will be within the next few days. Thank you again!

  23. Rodrigo Santos says:

I think we all colud thonk about make a donation becouse these guys are working hard to provide us a cutting edge application! I want to donate guys! What about the others ?

  24. Gary says:

Hi i cannot get the application to generate a route at all (V1.1) i am in the UK and all i get is an error message saying “no driving direction can be computed using your query”. Is this becasue i does not work in the UK? I have tried both post code(zip code) and road name but same result.

  25. Steven c says:

as I stated before, I will donate once a stable and usable goi e prompt and use current location feature are added… I will chip in 2″$20 then

  26. Nathan says:

Mike: G-maps= no turn by turn directions, no international translation

Gary: you need to put in the WHOLE address ( eg: 1234 Edinburgh way, Edinburgh, UK (or Scotland)

    Cleber Cesario: Look here, http://xgpsdev.xwaves.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=62

Steven C: this is free software. you just need an iphone 3g or a gps dongle (iGPS360, iGPSD)

  27. Archangl says:

I’ve been a longtime user of 1.1 and love it! One bug I found recently that no one has mentioned, or maybe even noticed, I use this with a data cable connected to stay charged and to play music through, when playing iPod during Xgps everything is great, but when closing down XGPS, say to go back to the iPod to start a particular song or whatever, it pauses the iPod then when playing again it plays only through the iPhone speakers not throug hthe data cable. Only happens when transitioning from XGPS to iPod via iPod controls, no other program, causes this bug! I can’t wait to experiance 1.2!

  28. John says:

    ETA for 1.2??

  29. Eric says:

    Great work, again!

I am not a programmer, but an enthusiast of what you guys are doing!

Any ideas to also insert a HUD-option?
Possibly poi like speedcams coming up?
    3d mapping?

    Just thinking out loud! Cheers

  30. Love xgps says:

I love xgps 1.1 even with it’s limitations, I can’t wait for 1.2. I have been checking here since the 20th of feb every couple of hours and will continue to do so until I can try 1.2… Since I have been loving this application I just wanted to dropoff this message to thank the developers on doing a wonderful job (I’m definitly donating)

  31. Steven c says:

    nathan:

    1. gmaps west/east does indeed have turn by turn in 1.2… it has an arrow on the top right that shows distance to the next turn or merge and an arrow.

it lacks vocal turn by turn however does find current location and reroutes you.

it uses navtec maps and I prefer google.

I know xgps is free but I feel I would rather support a coder working through cydia than onethat has to give a cut to apple…

  32. Sebastian says:

What are you people taking about, there already is a way to donate so if you like this App, donate via PayPal!

  33. ViViDboarder says:

Firstly. Awesome work! You have made an amazing program that is so powerful and yet still manages to fit the look and feel of an apple product. Thanks!

Next, is it possible of will it be to input a trip destination and zoom level and then have the software download the maps for the whole trip? I think it would be very useful for offline work. ;)

  34. musti says:

Steven c: for the love of God, please shut up.

  35. Thomas says:

So…. um… where is it? I know that it’s hard to nail down exact dates. But there was a rumor that this would be out on the 20th….. Could you maybe start a new rumor so that we have a ballpark for when to look at cydia for an update?

    thanks
    tb

  36. marlom says:

dude… its taking to long… i knw u guys have stuff to do but come on!

  37. marlom says:

i agree with musti… steven c SHUT THE HELL UP

  38. khal says:

It wont be out until the 7th so get over it and wait until it’s done

  39. mattsea says:

Will the new release work with new iphone 3G to cache maps before traveling to areas with no or very expensive 3G coverage?

Will it cache at multiple zoom levels?

Can the map cache be created over a high speed link using my computer then downloaded to the iphone 3g?

How much space would say a country like India for example take up if all levels of street map info was loaded?

Can the app work with any free online maps like Openstreet Maps or even just scanned maps?

  40. laurie says:

Hi people. I keep getting this error saying “Unable to get the GPS position. The GPS is not currently giving any position information” am I missing something? I have tried it on many or the modules for example

    Xgps Madule
    Iphone 3G GPS
IGPSD – which you need some sort of license for
    IGPS360

But the same error comes up for most except Iphone 3g GPS

    Can anyone help?

  41. mattsea says:

Does the new application have the ability to SMS the iphone position to another mobile if the iphone moves a certain distance from an arbitrary position set by me? i.e. so that I could recover my iphone if it was stolen? Or if say the iphone was in a bag, car, pack etc that was stolen I could track it down?

  42. marlom says:

yeah whats up with that error i keep getting it too. i have an ipod touch first gen.

  43. gerd says:

thanks a lot for the good work
