The new major release of xGPS is now available. It includes a lot of new functionalities and lot of bug fix. As requested by many users there is now a preliminary driving directions support. It is still not fully complete (continue to read to know why
but at least it works quite good. The lag with the iGPS360 GPS is now corrected. The auto-rotation feature for the map is now better and the map doesn’t “shake” anymore. There is also now a bookmark system for the driving directions. We can continue to enumerate all the features and bug fix all day long so if you are interested in all the changes we encourage you to visit this page:
Some precisions must be made about the driving directions. The driving directions are provided by Google. So you will need to have an Internet connection to get the direction. However thanks to the bookmarks, the driving directions are automatically saved and you can pick them later with the Bookmarks button (top left on the screen when you search for driving directions).
The release of xGPS Maps Manager is a bit delayed. A bug fix release should appear next week.
Now we have to speak a little bit more about the maps because many people are saying “Maps are bigs” or “Internet connection bothers me”. Maps are big because it is simply images and images are really heavy. For the current version of xGPS it is not possible to overcome this problem. However it is planed to support vectorial map in the version 2.0 of the software (which hasn’t been yet started, so it is for the far away future). A lot of people say “Ok why don’t you use TomTom or whatever other maps ?”. Simply because the format is closed and even encrypted (in the TomTom case) so it is not possible (now) to extract useful information.
As you will see there is still a lot of place for improvement for xGPS. The following features are planned for the next version: Vocal guiding (in English first), Next direction distance, the recomputation of an itinerary will take into account the direction which you are currently heading and more…
We want also to thanks all the people around this project. There is a little community growing up around it. We really like it. We have now about 10 peoples which are translating and testing beta version of the software. We have also a webmaster currently creating the official website for xGPS with a lot of tutorial, video etc… All the people participating to this project are enumerated on this special page: Contributors.
We have also donators which contribute to the project. We are running the servers and build machines without any fund. That’s why we encourage you to donate a few bucks to the project as it requires some money for the servers and administrative tasks. Without that the software will be no more free. You can donate by pressing the donate button on the right.
Without all of you we will not at this step today. So Thank you all!
Last but not least, the Cydia repository:

Thank you
Thank you very much!
Really great… I will download it in a few minutes…
Thanks for the effort, I really appreciate it…
I think I’ve found a bug… If I try to get the address for driving direction from an address in the address book, the software crashes… is it normal?
Yeah!!!
No it’s not normal. What is the exact address displayed in the Contact Application?
great job!!!
Thank you very much!
The exact address is:
It’s been created from the address book itself, so it’s not a “token” problem…
WTF!?
The address was:
Street Name Civic No. City
Seems to be filtered ? Just send it using the contact page http://xwaves.net/?inc=contact
Anyone else having this address book problems?
thanks this is great
Will your future versions of xgps support offline directions (hopefully v2.0) because with maps offline on my previous 2.1 fw i was able to get directions offline.
Im really interestes in the vectorial support when do u plan on releasing it?
Offline directions is more or less supported. When you search for driving directions, xGPS save it in the bookmarks (by default) so you can open the bookmark later without any Internet connection and get the directions back.
We have no date for vectorial map support.
Thanks for the great work. I hope you are haing as much fun working on this as I am following your progress and using your software w
Ok thanks ive just been testing it out and i must say its a huge improvement although getting the directions is very difficult i have to type in the city and postcode to get the directions and even then the directions dont always come up. Im not good with postcodes so this makes it almost useless to me as i cant get the directions anyway
Maybe you could implement the way maps does it where you search and you get a variety of different results
Oh and one more thing, i have downloaded the map that i want for offline use but now if i want to look at other zoom levels that i havent downloaded it wont show up even with an internet connections. Thanks mathieu and keep up the good work
P.S i live in Australia
Hey Mathieu!
I appreciate your hard word, thanks a lot for this great app
There is one thing i cant wait or in the nex release:
Next direction distance!!!!
Does it mean that the distance will count down like in a tomtom sofftware like:
300m, 200m, 100, 50m!
If you know what i mean…
That would be awesome
What release date do you expect fpr xgps 1.2??
again thx
tgo
tnx for the release
… next step is something like talking… that’s would be great
hello and congratulations again! i’m trying the driving directions here in Montreal, from current position to anywhere (i’ve tried a random address in Montreal ofr the destination) – and it gives me Error : no driving direction can be computed using your query. If i try the same search in google maps and it works. Must the address be written in a particular format? Thank you!
Yes it’s a Google limitation. You have to provide the full address, i.e. the street name, the City name and the country and sometime you even need to specify the ZIP code.
Steven, the problem you are having is because, when you uploaded the map file to your ipod/iphone, you had not set WRITE permission on the file. Open your file manager and connect to the ipod/iphone, and change the file properties to allow WRITE access
@Skye: Maybe you should tell, which file needs WRITE access?
This version looks great. And it’s worth donating s.th.
I checked the driving directions. It seems to work fine for me (Berlin). I’m able to choose an address from the address-book, or type s.th. without ZIP-code.
Very cool!!
Grate. I am looking forward to test this new version. Just one thing. If I miss a turn and I use the Driving directions to recalculate the route does it means it connects to internet and does the recalculating or it uses the end point from the earlier and works offline? If you would need a Czech translator let me know. I can translate it for you.
To recompute the routes you have to have an internet connection, yes. For the translation you can contact us here: http://www.xwaves.net/?inc=contact

Guys in my observation the driving directions error is because of unable to spot the start location. If you are in a location that is far from any route on the map which GPS spots as current location and try to give the destination address then you will get an error. If you are on a road and try the whole process then you won’t get any error.
First off, thanks for the awesome work you’ve done, it’s a big improvement over the previous version, and looks more and more like professional gps software! Thanks for all the hard work’ One bug I’ve noticed, after manually putting in the direction, and after it calculates, it displays the ‘wrong way’ sign, and then it has the popup saying ‘cannot get directions.’ and then it loses the directions.

YES i am having trouble too
I put in an exact address as noted on my browswer for GOOGLE, and it still gives me the same error and shows Wrong Way POP up and then looses my driving directions
Then error – Error : no driving direction can be computed using your query.
Suspect its a small bug, but great work, maybe you can tie it to POI now
Thanks so much
I have a question…..I use iGPS360`but it works as iPhone 3G. every time when I turn the GPS select to iGPS360, it doesn’t work. is it my device problem? or that’s a bug?
Thanks skye i will give it a try now
I tried changing the permissions and ticked all the write permission boxes and it is working now (very slowly) but doesnt work when i have gps enabled. I have to disable gps then let the map load. What are the exact permissions should i have for it?
Thank you for your great work Mathieu!!!
It would be great in the “directions/places” or similar sorry, to be able to click on my target destination, let’s say Walmart and click on my choice and save that destination as a bookmark. If I’m correct locations from your contact list are only available. When I click on my destination choice now, I just get the blue dot representing that location but not the ablity to select it then route it with my current location. If I’m wrong please point me in the right direction. Thanks
Some errors in polish. For sample “złantrasa”. Must be “zła trasa”.
Congratulations for your new release, I tested it yesterday and I have to say that it’s a huge improvement… it’s much more stable, precise, worked really well. I think this program has a great potential, keep up with the good work!
Kruisko: The one he copied across (Sorry, I thought that was pretty obvious)
I dunno, I have yet to get the directions to work at all. I used the exact same material I used for a google dir search and came up with a cannot map for query error. I’m able to locate the destination using search, but past that the two things don’t go anywhere. I also can’t figure out how to mark locations or add bookmarks.
Very nice! Turn by turn navigation and recalculating the route works very well! Loading the map is improved, too! Keep the good work! A great feature would be auto zooming in and out depending of the car’s speed.
Mathieu I downloaded on my iphone which had previous versions w/o any problems. I then installed on my wife’s iphone and even though it said it was installed it never showed up. I deleted it and reinstalled and still nothing. Thanks
I think there are some problems withe the driving directions.

Thank a lot!! I want to make sure that I am understanding a couple things. Even though the option for using current location exists it does not work, at least it does not work for me…is that the case for all of you???
I was able to make a custom change to the location blue dot…I changed it to a Boston Red Sox logo…I think that it is cool.
THanks again so much…I am really looking forward to voice!!!
What do you mean by “Apple approved” translation in Greek?I can translate the text you want from English to Greek and you can do the rest about intergrating it in the programm. You have my e-mail so…
I’ve just upgraded to 1.1. My Itouch is at 2.2. I have an xgps360 attached and am connected to the internet. I get the same error message as others have (“no driving direction…”) when I type type my desired destination in the lower bar and I have the default words “Current Position” in the upper bar. When I manually type the address of my current location in the upper bar instead of using “Current Position” and then type in the destination in the bar below, I do get a route for my destination, but then in about 5 seconds a red “wrong way” message comes on the screen (I’m in the house sitting in front of my computer!) and then in a few more seconds the route disappears from the map and I get the “no driving direction…” message. When I go back to the screen where I entered the desired route information, everything I typed in is gone. Do i have to save the direction somehow when they first pop up? Is there no way to use the “current position” function with the xgps360 module?
CORRECTION- I have an iGPS360 module, NOT xgps360
Can someone please explain that the GPX logging option does, I dont understand it.
Nice post. Thank you for the info. Keep it up.
Nice work!
I’ve found a bug, when I am trying to download an 1300MB map, then the xpgs is crashing after 2-3%.
Mark Sutter,
That happens to me as well…i even tried to get my position on the street outside my house and it still could not get directions unless i entered the starting location…i will try again at work.
Andy
I have to assume that since the “driving directions” function is coming from Google, and it requires both a typed start and destination, there is no interface to translate the gps info into a street address, so the “current position” default cannot be used. The the “wrong way” message continues to come on both with gps enabled or disabled, but the deletion of the just acquired route is only sometimes happening. However, the route is saved in bookmarks if so enabled, and if so, can be immediately accessed and reestablished onscreen.
Another problem I’ve experienced is running out of map while traveling with the gps on (the screen goes to a checkerboard and a message appears indicating the inability to find a map). I’ve checked my downloaded maps when not connected to the internet and it appears that I have the whole U.S. available at all zoom levels. So why the inability to find the map when driving?
I also note that while driving with gps on, rather than the map moving to stay under the position arrow, the position arrow moves and eventually moves offscreen if the map is not manually moved to stay under the arrow. Any setting change to enable the map to move automatically? Is there a way to have speed displayed in MPH?
Thanks in advance for any help and many thanks to the team for their continuing work and great software!
