Due to the recent changes in Google Maps, we have to also release a bug fix version of xGPS Maps manager. Nothing else has changed.
The version 1.1 of xGPS was initially scheduled to be released on the 30th November. However due to the large amount of work there is still to do, we are obliged to postpone the release to, at least, next week (6th December). In this version turn-by-turn directions will be more or less available.
xGPS Maps manager can be downloaded here: xGPS Maps Manager-3
Good work Mathieu!!!! Thanks!
It will be tried today
I’m waiting for a navigation based on OSM: it’ll be absoluty fantastic!
Thank you for your great job.
Please join to OSM community!
Lil’ questions:
I cover my city at zoom 17. It means that if I don’t download maps with more zoom (like 5) I won’t have any more detail that the shown at 17 in manager?
thanks!
finally the download function perfectly without errors even with large maps, Thank you very much.
Just one question the values you how to get a map with zoom working?
Mathieu,
The link downloaded xgpsmanager1.jar – is this correct?
yes and work fine!
[...] die in Google Maps zijn doorgevoerd. In feite niet meer dan een bugfix-tussenrelease. Via: xWaves Downloaden kan hier: xGPS Maps Manager 3 Vorige [...]
@hdd123: Yes the link is correct.
To get a map with working zoom you are now obliged to download each zoom level separately, i.e. launch xGPS maps manager, select aa zoom level to download and a region, download it and repeat the same steps for all the zoom level and then close xGPS maps Manager.
Why does it download so slowly? I only want to download the Netherlands and it’s about 3GB, but after two minutes it’s still only got 0,13 %?!
Sorry, I dont see any changes. Can’t download Maps on zoom level 17 and 16, same on 1 and 2 (ok you dont really need 1 and 2, but 16 and 17)
The Manager is very slow, and Maps of my Country are 5 GB large on zoom level 15 (!!). I even cant read the names of all streets because its to less detailled… A user should have zoomlevels from maybe 7 or 8 to 17… but how big would that be? 10, 15 Gb? Sry I only have 8 on my phone and I also want to hear some music… there’s gotta be another way… this maps are simply to big.
I finally make it work with no problems! Right now I have a funtional and complete map of my city.
Thanks!!!
How can I download maps in local language (not English)?
I was wondering if xGPS will work like TomTom???
I hope so!
What is a “normal” size to download your maps?
I want to put the maps of The Netherlands on my iPhone, when i’m goin on a holiday, i will oput that on my phone either.
But i hope, you can shrink the size of the maps in the future.
Further i was wondering if the navigation automaticaly zoom in, when you’re in the city.
What will it cost to use it?
Hope you all can help me with these questions.
I also got it work !
Thank you for the excelent job !
I got some Data Corrupt. Does xGPS manager tries to download the tile again ?
thanks !
Where do I find some instructions on How to send the maps I downloaded to the iPhone ?
I downloaded, selected the receive maps option and nothing happens. It was waiting the manager to send the maps.
Does it work on Linux ?
Oh, another question:
If I select a region, download, but some of them are not downloaded. If I ask to download again, will it download only the tiles that is not on the base or it will download everything again ?
thanks….
Yes it works in Linux but the receive Maps function is not yet implemented (at all). You can find instructions on how to put the downloaded maps here: http://xgps.xwaves.net/2008/10/26/first-alpha-release-of-xgps-maps-manager/
The already downloaded region is not re-downloaded if you select it again at the same zoom level.
Thanks for a new update.
Could you in some future version implement multi-level downloading in Maps Manager (i.e., possibility to set levels range like 10-17)?
Thank you Mathieu, it seems to work.
I would appreciate multi-level downloading as well.
And please, I want to save the region-shapes…
But the most urgent thing, because the files are getting too big: you should change the format at all to vector-graphic like OSM… and maybe its goog to leave google
One question: What happens if Google makes an update of some areas? Will they be loaded, if I go over that region again? Or does the mapmanager ignore them because an older version is already downloaded…
Once again: Great work and I really looking forward to turn-by-turn-navigation…
Mathieu, I have 3 requests
1. Is there any way to optimize the XGPS map download size i.e. if you take Garmin Nuvi 760 GPS the size of the entire North America is around 1.3 GB and fits on a 2 GB SD Card.
2. Is there any way to create a specific route in XGPS Manager and upload only that xGPS_map.db file to iPhone. Ex: If I want to travel from San Jose to Los Angeles it should capture only this route and not all the other routes.
3. XGps Util doesn’t work with iGPSD or iGPS360. Is there any way to incorporate this functionality?
Finally your work is amazing and I would like to thank all your Team…
Two things:
As already mentioned, what about a feature to download multiple zoom levels in one go ?
Second, until the first is implemented, can it at least remember the selected region between downloads ?
I downloaded the map of the netherlands with zoomlevel 16, but i get an error message saying that the download completed with errors.
This results in squares (quite a lot) missing on the map as I navigate.
Am I doing something wrong? I downloaded the latest mapmanager….
p.s. great app!
Hi Mathieu,
Just a quick question, when you stated “In this version turn-by-turn directions available.” do the turn-by-turn will be the same one as showing on Google Maps but without a connection? Or it will be different?
Thank you, bye!
First the maps will always be as big as now because it is not possible to compress it in any way. The only way to solve that is to use vectorial maps and it means that we need vectorial data which is only freely available on the OSM project which is not yet really spread. We have planned to add vector support in the hypothetic version 2.0 but it is for the far away future.
Multi level downloading will be in the next xGPS Maps manger release as well as many bug fix.
We will not make xGPS Util working with iGPS360 or iGPSD, it is up to the respective company to develop their own utility.
Turn by turn directions will be the same as in Google Maps, yes.
Great work so far. Thanks a lot.
Is there planed a voice response in future version?
I don’t know what you mean by voice response, but in the next next version
there will be vocal turn by turn instructions (only in English).
Great, I think thats exactly what I was asking for
Is it planed in other languages too?
Thanks a lot
We hope to implement it in other language too but we have planned to use a TTS engine (voice synthesizer) so the voice will electronically generated. Support for other language will require other voice which is very complicated to generate. We will try to implement it in another way but it is not sure that we can.
Hello,
Is it not possible that you work with NavTeq maps or TeleAtlas?
If this is possible, the maps would be much smaller.
Benelux would be 50Mb and it is now about 30Gb at the best zoom level :s
Guys and Gals-
Go check out this site http://trac.xwaves.net/xGPS/ticket/1
It is like a Christmas Advent Calendar, everyday has something new and exciting. Mathieu you are the adult version of Santa for me…I love you!:)
I meant to link this one…

Hello:
I cant add Cydia Source to the installer . Im using an older firmware in my Iphone 2g 1.1.4 .Do I have to use 2.x version in order to download cydia software ?
Thanks in advance
Yes, the Cydia source is only meant to be use with Cydia, not the Installer. And xGPS is only compatible with the firmware 2.0 or greater. Just upgrade, it’s safe now if you follow carefully the jailbreak instruction (Google it for more info.)
Xgps
Will there ever be a bookmark or pin type system. I would like to drop points of interest on the way. Also, will driving routes that were mapped out while connected to the internet be available for use offline? Will the arrow scale with the map in future pictures, at 17 zoom, the arrow is bigger than the streets. I also get a twitchy arrow or “flipping” map when sitting at a stop light, probably due to reception errors or something, but can it be buffered? Will auto-rotation be streamlined, it is actually about 10-30 meters behind my current position. With auto-rotate disabled, you lose the ability to use two fingers to rotate the map, this was very helpful to correctly orient the image to your position, especially considering flipping the Ipod like you would a paper map doesn’t function nearly the same.
GPS Manager
I had been using the first version up until now. This new version is VERY slow and freezes often. It also won’t let you do maps over 8gb or so.
Other than that, great app. My wife ad I used it going down to the next island here in Japan. We didn’t have GPS running at the time so navigating was a little rudimentary, but the ease of use made it very easy for her to learn and operate. Thanks.
Thank you for the good job!!! Wonderful!!!
Only,
these maps are TOO BIG, a country map with Tom Tom or Route 66 is about 200mb.
Italy at 15 zoom is about 12GB!!! My iPhone is only 8 gb…
At medium zoom i didn’t see the route.r
There isn’t a way to have more more more smaller maps???
If a navigator helps when you don’t know the routes, with Xgps software you can only travel in his area.
If you are able to emprove (very)smaller maps we finally have the navigator for iPhone!!!
Thank you for all and my best wishes!!!
Right!!! Teleatlas or Navteqs are not compatibles???
In my opinion without smaller maps (in mb) you can only travel in your city…
Thank you for the good job you´re doing
One question:
I´ve a downloaded a 47Mb map in the iPhone but can´t see it.
How can I see downloaded maps in my Iphone if I already don´t have the iGPS360 module ?(it´s comming
Thank´s
Fernando-
Following the link that Mathieu posted above, it tells you where to put the maps!
Here are my suggestions for the manager, in addition to those posted before. these are simple:
1) remember last area seem: when we start xgpsmanager again, it show the last area, not the french default.
2) Double click increases zoom level (for thoses mouses that does not have wheels). And the zoom should focus the mouse pointer.
Oh, and I almost forgot…
Would it be possible (or very dificult) to implement the following:
We could have some way to trace a route on manager and it downloads all maps related to that route.
This is useful if we go to a trip and want to save the routes related to where we will pass, on the road… so we do not need to download the map several times and find the path mannually….
Thanks….
Does someone have the same problem than me?
When I try to download a map with xgpsmanager with other zoom level tan 17 i.e. level 5, a message telling a 0.0 map size will be downloaded, it happens with all zoom levels different fom 17.
Any help?
It was happening to me on the old version. this new does not.
I´ve downloaded this one http://xgps.xwaves.net/wp-content/uploads/xgpsmanager1.jar that is supposed to be the “xGPS Maps Manager-3″, is this the last version?
Thank´s for the help.
yes
Then I don´t know why I get this error, because I have the right version.
What I do is: Add a region, then change the zoom value from 17 to 5 and click “Download Selected Map Region”, and the message appears, after than a download scroll appears but stays at 0%
I use Windows XP SP2 with last Java Version.
Is there a way to use the Global Map Download Tool with xGPS on the iphone? It works for the native maps application.
Is there a way to use the xGPS Maps Manager to download topo maps?
You mentioned that the xGPS Util will not work with the iGPS360 in future versions. Will future versions of xGPS Map Manager work with the iGPS360?
thanks,
k

We will not make xGPS Util working with iGPS360 or iGPSD, it is up to the respective company to develop their own utility.
xGPS Maps manager is only a PC-based utility to download maps and in the future to manage xGPS data stored on the iPhone. There is no link between it and any GPS device.
Can’t wait. I think all the talk about other programs is fine but disrespectful in a way. I appreciate what this is going to offer us and would like to donate…I did have a problem last time I tried to. I will try agai. On Saturday. You guys rock!!!!
Hi, nice job. Just a litte “bug”: if I am working with a proxy server there is not possibility to set it and this software doesn’t work…
