Bugs fix release

Due to the Google Maps problem we have released a small bugs fix release which solves the Google Maps bug and other little bugs. There are no real other improvement except for the support of the mph for the speed. More information can be found in the ChangeLog.

This version also includes all the translations. We have added also the Traditional Chinese translation. Again thank you all for your help.

hi first of all i would like to thank you a lot for the wonderful program xgps you created it it awesome. i would like to ask if it is possible to change the green arrow that appears in the program with a smaller dot like figure if it is possible just a suggestion :) the program is damn great as it is thanks :)

  2. Mathieu says:

Yes, sure it is planned to add this option

  3. Jason says:

    Hi xGPS guys..
I have 2 questions… when will teh xGPS Manager work again? Can download maps now, unfortunately…

When do you plan to release the first working master version of xGPS?

    keep on guys, youre great!

  5. Mathieu says:

the xGPS maps manager will be released in about 2 days.

What do you mean by working master version?
Roadmap can be found on our Trac server: http://trac.xwaves.net/xGPS

  6. Lelik11a says:

i installed it on my iPhone 3G, using build in gps, but xGPS doesnt show correct speed… If i am standing still, it show my speed to all between 15 and up to 185 km/h… Is it a bug, or program is not working to well with build in gps on iphone 3g?

  7. Mathieu says:

It’s actually a bug but which cannot be corrected. The Apple implementation of the GPS layer is really messy and there is no way to fetch the GPS speed. Thus a hack has been made to retrieve the speed but this hack works only if you are moving at least at 20 km/h. That’s why your speed output is quite buggy.

    @ Mathieu

Thanks for the mph function as requested. I have a little technical question that I’m sure you can answer.

When a pug-in GPS unit is used with xGPS on an iPhone 3G, does the internal GPS get turned off or are both GPS units running when Location Services are enabled?

    hdd123

  9. Mathieu says:

As long as you select your plug-in GPS in the Settings->GPS To use, the internal iPhone 3G GPS is disabled and powered off.

  10. Vlad says:

I noticed that there is a 3-4s lag in display from real position, it means that at 60km the position is about 50-60m off which is very noticeable for example when arriving at a roundabout.
Is it possible to reduce this lag ?

    (xGPS version 1.0.1-5 with iGPS360)

  11. helyair says:

Good, I have seen roadmap. Only 3 weeks… :D Good work!

  12. Skye says:

Is it possible to have xGPS use the internal faux GPS of the iPod Touch (which triangulates your location from nearby wifi points) to get an initial location before the add-on GPS unit itself (in my case, iGPS360) gets a lock?

In metro areas, this is fairly accurate and very quick to find your general location, and once a proper GPS lock is obtained this could then take-over and provide a more accurate response. Perhaps having an icon displayed to say which it is currently using (such as the GPS icon at the top changing to a wifi icon?) would allow the user to differentiate between which the software is currently using

  13. dan says:

hi guys, i’d like to know if it’s possible to download the maps through iTunes?
graet software , keep on the good job:)

  14. koRnolio says:

    Hi,

I would like to know if there is a way to download another type of maps instead of Google Maps, since Google Maps in my location (Argentina) is not currently fully functional.
Could I download Livemaps.com.ar? or OpenStreetMap.com maps? They are really complete and accurate.

    Thanks for your support!
    bye!

hi, this weekend i will be in a foreign country, so i won’t be able to use my cellular data network and i would need to download the map of a city..

i am trying to do it directly with the iPhone app.. i select the area i need, and the program says that is going to download 14MB.. when it has finished, i notice that the downloaded map is only 8MB, and when i go to navigate offline, i can see a bigger area than the expected, but most important, i can see it only at the zoom level it was when i have selcted the area to download..

how can i download the right area with all the zoom levels?
i thought this was the bug you were talking about but i’m already using the new release..

    thanks for you help
    DNL

  16. Werner says:

I get many grey screens. Only a few zoom levels work. Can you let me know how to solve this. I have the same issue on my iPhone by the way.

  17. Juan says:

    Hi!
Is it going to be translated to Spanish?

  18. Luc says:

Mathieu, thanks a lot for the good work, I’ll certainly donate. I’m using the sw with the iGPS360 from Orange Gadgets here in Belgium. It works great on my first gen Iphone fw 2.1 and I’m sure you are aware of the following findings: 1) there is a lag in showing the exact position, 2) when map auto-rotation is on the map is a bit shaky when moving/driving, 3) the speed is jumping up and down a bit.
Just looking forward to checking out the turn by turn navigation feature.

  19. Mathieu says:

@ Skye: We will think about that for next versions.

    @ dan: No, it isn’t.

@ koRnolio: It will be in the future. Not currently.

@ sneike: When you use your iPhone to download a map area, it will download it at the most detailed zoom level and no other level are downloaded. With the xGPS Maps Manager (currently not working but work is in progress ;-) ) you can download the levels you want.

@ Werner: Update to the latest version (1.0.1-5) and delete your maps (Settings->Delete downloaded Maps)

@ Juan, Yes it will be. If you want to help, just contact us.

@ Luc: Thank you for your donation again! For 1) Yes it’s known and we are working on that but we haven’t any device yet to test. It should arrive next week. 2) Yes it is also known :-) . We will correct that. 3) Unfortunately it is due to the GPS and we cannot do anything for that. We are reading the speed directly from the GPS.
The turn by turn navigation feature will be in the next major release. (See http://trac.xwaves.net/xGPS/roadmap for more or less precise dates)

  20. koRnolio says:

Mathieu thanks for the answer! really appreciate it! :D

Now I have just one more question, is there a way I could import my own maps to the xGPS application? Maps I’ve made with the GMDL application for example.
If this is not possible, could you advice an option for me to use the iGPS360 module with the iPhone Google Maps app?
And if this is also not possible I don’t know what I’m gonna do. :(

    Thanks for all your help!
    bye!

  21. Mathieu says:

No it’s not possible to use GMDL maps with xGPS. If you wan to do it you have to convert it manually (eg. write a program to do it). And it is not possible to use iPhone Google Maps with any other GPS than the iPhone 3G one.
Why do you want such an option? Just wait until this weekend and xGPS Maps Manager will allow you download all the maps with all the levels you want ;) !

  22. koRnolio says:

Sure will Mathieu, thanks a lot for your answers! :D

  23. Vlad says:

    Hello,

For iGPS360 and igpsd could you add an option to use Sirf III protocol to tweak some gps features like enable/disable “pedestrian” mode (in pedestrian mode the fix is not locked when speed is small and there is not the speed histeresis at small speed) ?

  24. DNKROZ says:

    Hi there.

Can’t wait to the xGPS maps manager to be released, it’s just much more convenient than the iPod for downloading maps ;) nice work btw (Iuse linux and it’s great it works “out of the box”, thanks to java).

Also notice the bug Vlad pointed out, real position is 4 to 5 seconds away from the showed one (I also use iGPS360), but when stopped it pinpoints you on the map later (precision is great), I’m afraid the jumpy speed bug is related to this one cause if you maintain a fixed speed it shows speed correctly (2 Km/h difference to the speedometer reading). When you change speed it simply lags the 4 to 5 seconds.

I find very interesting (and useful) the “pedestrian” mode, should be a nice addon in the event you decide to code that.

I noticed another issue. Program has the option to record GPS log (I assume is GPX file format) to /tmp/….log, can’t remember the exact name). However, I couldn’t test this, cause when you have that option selected, if you exit the program and enter again it overwrites old file (instead of append) so you end with a blank (only header) file till GPS lock.
It should be better if it was like the logs of the “Datalogger” GPS models, adding the new info instead of creating a new log (and losing the old one).

Having said this, you’ve made a really good software. If you need an Spanish translator (yes, that’s why my English sucks, but I write spanish fluently XDDD) don’t hesitate to ask me, I’d be glad to be of any help.

    Regards.

    :(

  28. Younghoo says:

  29. Mathieu says:

I can repeat it 10000 times: xGPS Maps Manager is not working anymore, an update will be released this weekend. Please read all the comments before asking questions!
