New release of xGPS Software

We are proud to present to you the new release of our xGPS software tagged 1.0.1-4. This release includes some new features and a lot of bug fixes. Unfortunately we haven’t completely solved the problem concerning the downloading of maps. However things are now more stable than before and we are working to eliminate all the remaining bugs.

You must know that this version is not compatible with all the old maps you have downloaded until now. On the first launch they will be deleted! You are warned! However the xGPS Maps managing software is still compatible with this version.

This version add the experimental support of map auto-rotation. It means that the map will rotate according to your movings. It also the support of the iGPS360 from Orange Gadgets. GPX logging facilities are also included (so now you don’t have any excuse to not want to improve OpenStreetMap ;-) . You can enable it in the settings. Your position will then be logged to the file /tmp/xgps_gpxtrack.log in your iPhone or iPod Touch. There is currently no easy to get this file back (except through SSH/SFTP) but the xGPS Maps manager will soon be able to do that seemlessly.

Unfortunately this version isn’t fully localized due to some schedule problems. The next release will then be fully translated.

We remind you that our Cydia repository to be able to install this software is: http://cydia.xwaves.net

We thank you all for all your support.

    Hi Mathieu,

This is great news! I have downloaded the new version and have it running on 2.0.1. I will take it out on the road after I have downloaded my local xGPSManager maps to it (about 567MB of data for LA and Orange County at the deepest zoom level)

The software looks great with a lot of new options. For users of the iGPS360 module, make sure to select the iGPS360 module under Settings -> GPS to use -> iGPS360.

Also, if you want to prevent your phone from going to sleep, turn “Prevent Sleep Mode”. Thanks Mathieu, that is a VERY handy option!

If you are using this software, I suggest DONATING some money to Mathieu for all his effort over the last numerous months!

Great feautures, but how this version can be compatible with xGps manager? Manager downloads maps in old format, doesn’t it?

  3. Jubei says:

    nice update!
xGPS doesn’t crash anymore when it tries to download more maps. My 400 mb map still works flawlessly at different zooms levels.
    A few questions:
What is “retrieve” in the settings?
You are talking about osm. Is xGPS planning to support it? That would open so many doors (thinking about a “navigate to” feature…)

Thanks for that pretty cool tool, finally makes my Itouch useful!

  4. Mathieu says:

This version is compatible with xGPS Maps Manager as we have planned to do it so :-) .

The retrieve option in the settings are currently useless. In the near future this option will be able to communicate with the computer and xGPS Maps manager to exchange maps, GPX logs and more.

We really would like to support OSM in a vectorial way. However our top 1 priority for now is to include driving directions. OSM will be the next step!

Glad to hear that this version seems to crash less often than before.

How do I install xGPS on my jailbroken iphone 3G? I have Cydia installed and I have looked for the Xwaves repository and it is nowhere to be found. Can anyone be of assistance? Thanks!

  6. Mathieu says:

    Updated post!

  7. Fab says:

    Nice job guys ;)

  8. jsmcdon1 says:

I’m getting error when adding the source: “Unable to decode source at http://cydia.xwaves.net” on my 2.1 jailbroken 2g iPhone. Any ideas? Is the software not ready for 2.1?

  9. Jubei says:

When you say driving direction, are you planning to implement it as an offline feature?
If you’re familiar with gps on the psp, mapThis had pretty cool features, except for real time driving direction, which I’d love to see on Itouch!

  10. Skye says:

updated to the latest version, and have run into some problems. It seems that I cant download any maps from within xGPS at all, when i come across a blank square it tries to retrieve it and then gives up

    any ideas?

  11. Mathieu says:

If someone gets some errors with our Cydia repository, it is due to some problems and our server. Just rertry later and it will works (now it works ;) ).

Skye: Are you connected to Internet? You need that connection in order to download map tiles.

  12. Skye says:

Yes, I am connected to the net. All other online apps work just fine. xGPS however wont receive any new map information

  13. Skye says:

Nevermind I have figured it out, the uploaded map from the PC download tool was not set to enable further writing to it

  14. Mathieu says:

Yep :-) . Others should read this comment!

  15. jsmcdon1 says:

Still no luck installing. I am getting the same error as before. I hope I can get the app installed before I get the hardware. I have installer 4, is this the problem maybe? Is your repo for earlier installer versions?

  16. jsmcdon1 says:

Oh I spoke too soon, Refresh just worked and it is installing.

  17. Skye says:

mmm have approximately 200MB for the city of Perth/Australia now, for most zoom levels, and various zoom levels for (high up, not close in) for the entire continent (zoomed enough to see all the small towns marked :)

next, I have to get Sydney and Melbourne maps for when Im over there next year

  18. Kruisko says:

    Hey mathieu,

first of all: the software works great.

To organize different maps, I made subfolders, where I put the downloaded databasefiles. One for China, one for Germany,…
And if I want do continue download maps for, lets say Germany, I put the Germany-datafile back to the same level as the javaprogramm and start the app.
Sometimes there is a db-journal-file, and sometimes not. If its there, its part of the download and I save that one together with the db-file.

It would be great, if the already downloaded parts would be marked as such in the software, so that I get an overview and better control about what I already have.
And if I could erase parts of the downloaded maps, for example for making finetuning after all the downloads, it would be great.
And the possibility to safe region-templates. So, that I can use a region for different zoom-levels. Or the possibility to just say, download that area in zoomlevel 1, 3, 5 and 8…

But best of all would be, if the xgps-software on iPhone would work with vector-maps!!! This google-stuff is simply to big. My Geramy-File has already a size of more than 1300 MB…

And something off topic: I sell my xgps-module on ebay, because I upgraded to iPhone 3G. For people who are interested:

  19. hdd123 says:

The latest version of xGPS is great! Download is functioning well and auto rotate function is stable. I’m just waiting for my iGPS360 unit to arrive to really test!

Can I make a features request? Would it be possible to have the speed display configureable so that it could show either km/h or miles/hour for us who still do things in these units? I understand that this might not be straight forward as any conversion will be dependant on how long the “mile” is – US or UK…. Perhaps a data entry cell on the settings page would be the answer so that the user can put their own coversion factor in, this being relative to their location?

    Keep up the GREAT WORK!

  20. chris says:

Would it be possible to enhance the desktop software to be able to use the maps that have been downloaded into the db file?

This may be slightly off topic, but I would love it if I could have offline access to my maps not only on my iPhone but also my laptop. Plus I have alot more storage space on laptop so I could get alot more maps.

  21. phil says:

is it going to be possible to use a BT GPS in the future? I have a couple of other devices, which makes the holux cable option seem like a more sensible ay to go than the i360gps iphone specific option. Any thoughts? Thanks,

  22. helyair says:

Many apps permit to export tracks and POI in KML files, is it possible to implement in xGPS the import of KML files? Thanks

  23. abonifacy says:

    Great software! Thanks a lot.
I also would like to ask for a very important (at least for me) feature: a possibility to force a specific language (at least – English) when downloading maps, like it’s done in browser (http://maps.google.com/?hl=en). Otherwise for some places I get map without labels.

  24. brian says:

i dont understand the purpose of dwnloading maps, can you please explain.
also when will turn by turn be implemented?
my km/h does not work,is that normal?

  25. Daniele says:

    Hi all
I download the MAP (900MB for all Italy), installed the software on my Iphone (not 3G) 2.1 and put the map on it (/var/mobile/Library) through WinSCP, but unfortunately when I try to navigate the map I don’t see anoything on the screen, although I see the exact map dimension under settings.

there someone that could help me? where am I wrong?

  26. Kevin says:

This is awesome software! I am very impressed with what you guys have done so far, and look forward to the inclusion of driving directions.

I do have one request though, is it possible to have an option to switch between the 2 location symbols (arrow and the dot), I personally liked the dot a lot more.

Thanks guys, keep up the great work!

  27. Vlad says:

just tried xGPS with my new iGPS360, was using before iGPSD cable and a Holux GPSlim236.
Work great but also lost km/h update, it always stay at 0 ! It used to work with Holux GPS…
I think also that map rotation to follow heading should be smoothed to prevent oscillation, it’s a bit distracting.
Btw good work so far !

  28. max_996 says:

    Dear Xwaves
I just bought IGPS360 module. I think it’ great. I woul like to give you a few suggestions for next Xgps release:

    - downloading maps from google file becomes really huge. I discovered it during some tests on Xgpsmanager 2. I was making a NURBURGRING racetrack map, because it’ lenght , the area took 5GB.
Same problem trying to do a map about ITALY… the software crashes.

    - NAvigator app: are you studying a way to set a nav system like others navigator? set start, set end , search for faster/shorter way?

    - IGPS360 Utility: i find really intresting a sort of utility to check GPS coord. latitude, longitude, speed.

-GPS360 Compatibility: I don’t know why the module works only in Xgps app. Is possible to have e feature that enable functionality in all other apps actually available in the store?

I Think your team is working on it . i’ll be glad to give more suggestion

    Hi,
I tried to record today a path with he GPX log.
It seems that every time I had an incoming call the log start from the beginning and also each time I closed the application.
so after 50 minutes of drive I had the log for 5 minutes.

Am I doing something wrong ? this feature of recording tracks is great and I hope it will be forther develop in the future.
    Thanks
    Moshe

Trying to download from cydia. At the end of download it says size mismatch and doesn’t finish. Any thoughts ?

  31. SeaPea says:

@Jfk: if you have double entries in your Cydia Source, it may cause this “size mismatch” problem. Try deleting the xwave entry in the Source list; leave only the MMi source (which most people will have as Cydia default); and find xGPS in the suitable section. Hope it helps.
