New release of xGPS Software

We are proud to present to you the new version of xGPS Software numbered 1.0.1-1. It corrects a lot of bugs and adds the support for iPhone 3G GPS and iGPSD cables. For more information about the changes, go to the ChangeLog page.

This version has also the support to search for cities or locations. Please keep in mind that if you want to search for a street you HAVE to enter also the city name. Because the search is Google based, you will have to have an Internet connection to search for places. Other important improvement is the support for other languages in the interface (Italian, German, French and Dutch for now). If anyone is interested to translate this software in another language feel free to contact us.

For those who want to use the xGPS software with iGPSD cable (sold here: http://store.igpsd.com), they have to provide a license number in the software. For the people they have bought a cable before the 27th September 2008, they have to acquire the license number on our store: http://store.xwaves.net. For the other you should have received your license number along with your cable.

Unfortunately we have a problem on our store. It is not currently possible to place an order because of some problems in our payment system. It will be restored on next Tuesday. Any news about this problem will be posted here.

Concerning the hardware question, we will not produce anymore xGPS Modules but support will still be available for this product. However we have still a few pieces in stock and they will be sold when the time comes (in about one month). More information about this will be also posted here. However we have made a partnership with the iGPSD team to provide a powerful GPS solution with their cable and our software.

We will end this post by thanking all the people helping us to develop this software. We have 3 people working on the translations of the software and one on the graphic part. So we would gracefully thanks:

  • Suondmao (Website: http://www.suondmao.altervista.org) for the Italian translation, the xGPS Logo and other graphical parts.
  • Gerard for his Dutch translation
  • Difensiphone for the German translation
We will now concentrate ourselves on the maps drawing engine which will display the driving directions.
If you have any questions about the software, please read the pages here: http://store.xwaves.net/?inc=products&id=2 before asking.
Thank you all for your support.

    hello people,

your software is getting better. Great work, thanks, and go ahead… and stopping the gps-module-production from your point of interest is absolutely comprehensible.

But what is with support for the already delivered modules? I’m still not happy with it. It still takes to long to get a connection.
Today I tried it in the car in Berlin, Germany on a one hour trip from Prenzlauer Berg in the north down to Lichtenrade in the south and I didn’t get my position. Not in the xGPS-utility and not in the xGPS-software.
Now I’m sitting in my room, top-floor level in the centre of Berlin and it took me more than 10 minutes to get the position. The gps-icon is not constantly green. It switches to orange every once a while…

Will there be a firmware upgrade or something that increases the reliability of the receiving-feature of your product?

    I appreciative your answer.

    hello,

Please contact us directly using this page : http://www.xwaves.net/?inc=contact

We will give you the instructions to help us solving this problem.

  3. Kruisko says:

    Did it.

But one question, other might be interested in: Does the map-download process delete the already downloaded map? I mean, does it replace or add?
If it adds the map I could download smaller portions which works more safe, I detected, and get my map-collection growing…

  4. Kruisko says:

… but mostly I wait for the desktop-map-managing software!

“we will not produce anymore xGPS Modules.”

There is an option for “Firmware upgrade” Will there ever be an update or are you guys giving up on the xGPS?

  7. Kalfany says:

Good job with the new release, it works much better than the older one, more precise and stable… But most important thing are driving directions, is there an estimated date to have them? And a suggestion, is it possible to make the map rotate so that the street you’re in always goes up? otherwise it’s a bit confusing to understand if to turn left or right… Anyway, congratulations again for your project, keep up the good work

  8. Mathieu says:

We will still continue to develop xGPS Module so if any improvements are made they will be released. For a firmware upgrade, we are working on a solution to speed up a little bit the startup connection time of the xGPS module so maybe it will be a firmware upgrade in the near future.

For the driving directions and other features, there is no date. We would not say a schedule and not respect it.

Good job with the new release!

    Hello.

Very very nice job. Keep on going.

Can u put OSM support too?
I made a webpage for OSM that works with iPhone ( http://www.iphone3g.go.ro/map/ ).
I think u can manage to make it work with OSM offline maps.
It would be great because OSM is curently updated.

    Tnx again.

  12. Mathieu says:

Yes OSM support is planned. What do you mean by OSM is currently updated?

  13. Chris2000 says:

OSM maps are currently updated via all the user who send their tracks and gps logs.

  14. Chris2000 says:

In the last version u had that OSM button.
When will it be functional in the actual version?
    Tnx

  15. Efty Edge says:

    Hi,
first – great piece of software. but when i try to download a map, xgps always quit after a while. the size of the ‘broken’ map is than round about 14 mbytes. is this a know problem? i ask because my 3g has 10 gbytes free.

thanx in advance and keep going on.

    efty

  16. Mathieu says:

Yes it’s a known problem. It will be corrected in future version.

  17. Fernando says:

Are all Holux GPS´s compatible or just M1000b and M1200b ?
Thanks in advance and good job :)

  18. Mathieu says:

Please ask this question to the iGPSD team directly. We don’t know nothing about these devices. We only do the software part. –> http://www.igpsd.com

  19. Kruisko says:

so, how is it going with the desktop-software for map-downloads?
is there a developersite on the net? or will it be released here?

  20. Kruisko says:

and, by the way, did you check my logfiles I send to you?

  21. hryamzik says:

First of all, thanks for the great software! I do not have a gps module yet, looking forward for getting igpsd cable. But even now I have to use googlemaps and iphone 2g’s location service, so this software looks very useful even now.

Downloading maps feature is great, but downloading sometimes hangs, especially on a slow connection. Background download doesn’t work for a long time for me.

Managing looks strange, are you going to add more options? Just add and delete all…

It would be great to choose zoom levels and types of maps (satellite/map/hybrid)

As far as I understand xgps’s map cash is separated from google map’s one. Is it possible to copy maps downloaded by xgps software to maps.app? I’ve used mappsoffline before, it took too much time to prepare maps and it required a windows computer, “blah”…

Could I possibly help you with russian localization?

  22. Mathieu says:

Concerning the downloading software for the computer a draft version is finished we are now working the interface between the software and the iPhone. It will be released here (or elsewhere but a news will be posted here).

The maps managing will not be improved on the iphone because we are developing a more clever application which will run on the computer.

Also we will not make the downloaded maps compatible with the Apple map’s application as we don’t see the point to do it.

Concerning the russian localization, it would be very helpful. Please contact us using this page: http://www.xwaves.net/index.php?inc=contact

  23. hryamzik says:

Well, maps.app shows maps/satelite/hybrid maps. It works with bookmarks. It’s useful.

There is a program called “maps offline” for using google cashes for maps.app. They should be prepared with a desktop program called “MapThis!”, windows only. And to have the ability to search for streets the other program should be used, and no way to have house numbers on offline mode. It took me several hours to prepare a simple offline map of my city.

By the way, MapThis! is quite a powerful tool, but too much things to do to have offline maps on an iphone. PC-less way is great, it’s a pity your program doesn’t have an ability to delete only unneeded pieces of maps.

Do you really store maps in a very different way than maps.app does? Probably maps offline could be tuned to import xgps’s cashes?

Unfortunately I’m far from iphone’s software development and can’t offer any help in that way.
