First public release of xGPS

We finally get a more or less usable version of our xGPS software (we are late of 2 hours, yes :-) .

Before wanting to try the software, please make sure to understand the following sentences:

The current version of the software (1.0.0-1) is the first public alpha version. It means that not all the features are implemented and a lot of known bugs are present. You are entirely responsible to use this software.

The current version does not implement the driving directions or the possibility to search for a city. It will be implemented in the near future. The current version has also a problem with the detection of the xGPS module. Sometimes the button “Enable GPS / Disable GPS” disappear even if the xGPS module is connected. If you get that, you can relaunch the software if you want.

To download maps for using it offline, you can tap on Settings and then manage maps. Then you can select an area of the map and tap download to download it. Yes, we know that it is difficult to select an area without pushing the zoom buttons. It is being corrected :-) .

This version is just here for testing purpose and it is in either cases not supported. We will not answer to any question if the software doesn’t work.

The xGPS software is only compatible on firmware 2.0 and greater (2.0.1 and 2.02 etc…) and works only with xGPS Modules (you can also use it without a GPS).

To install it, add the following repository to Cydia (if you don’t know how to do it, just read the quick start guide of xGPS module again):

http://cydia.xwaves.net/

Then browse the Navigation category and select xGPS.

Concerning the shipment of the xGPS modules, we have still a little delay. We hope to finish to send all the orders by the end of the week.

Thank you for your interest in our project.

Hi, I’m waiting to your gps module to be available to buy it, and in the midle time I’m testing tour software.

I just want to ask you something, when I try to download the portugal map it have 31350MB 31Gb, and my iPhone just have 16Gb, I know that I can donwload just a part of the map, but if we go to make a larger trip we need more map, we dont have any way to put this map smaller?

Thanks and keep up the good work.

  2. rabbid squirrel says:

I have noticed as with xgps util or xgps software even in the street they are some trouble to catch satellites.

  3. Mathieu says:

For any trouble concerning the xGPS Module, please contact us directly.

  4. Brian Movrin says:

How can I place an order for module?

  5. Joost says:

To kindof solve the to-big-of-a-map issue. For long routes you only need a main path from point a to point b, but now you have to select a squire of map. If you could like ‘freedraw’ a portion of the map you’d want. The you’d have smaller map sizes. right?

  6. Mathieu says:

    Right :-) !
But it will be too comlicated to draw it on the iphone screen. That’s why we are currently developing a small application for the computer to select exactly the part of the map you and to build a file that can be uploaded to your iphone.

  7. Mathieu says:

By the way, orders are closed.

  8. Joost says:

orders are closed.. but they will open again?

  9. Mathieu says:

Yes but we cannot say a precise date now. We have other high priority items than scheduling another production run. We hope to decide something by the end of the next week.

  10. Kim Mueller says:

Will a future version run on iPhone 3G and use its build in GPS module?

  11. Mathieu says:

    Yes !

  12. Mitch says:

will it work with the igpsd cable ? I already have the Holux gps…

  13. Mathieu says:

We are currently negotiating that with the igpsd team.

  14. bognik says:

Are you planning to make a data logger software ( in order to use it , for example, with OSM )? Thank you

  15. Mathieu says:

Yes there will be an option in xGPS to enable or disable logging but then it will be up to the user to get the right file in the iphone to upload it to OSM.

  16. Casper says:

Hi, I recieved my gps module yesterday and I must admit I’m loving it :)
There are a few small bugs with disappearing buttons sometimes, but restarting the app solves everything. And of course, it’s an early version of the software, not final.

Big thumbs up for the offline map usage.

I’m impressed, xwaves. Good job :)

Cheers, keep up the good work.

PS: Is it suppose to replace iPhones native Maps or will it work in both eventually?

  17. Mathieu says:

Thank you for this positive feedback. Very appreciated :-) .

The bug you are talking about are known and we hope to solve it in the next version of the software.

We cannot make the gps work in the Map application because of Apple restriction, unfortunately. The only thing we can do for the map application is something like that (see the video at the bottom):

  18. Casper says:

I’d love to try the modded Maps out, but if it doesn’t work with “directions” and liveupdate, then it’s… Nevermind :) In fact, I’m starting to realize, this wouldn’t be possible, yes? What the mod does is probably give it to Maps as a location, not a “here I am” location.

It’s not that I don’t like xGPS software, I do. I look very much forward to when it becomes more stable and it will be very useful obviously since most 1st gen iPhone owners have slow edge connections and no 3G of course.

So enjoy your holiday and keep up the good work :)

  19. Kruisko says:

I came home and found this note, that theres a package for me in the shop next door. It was too late, shop’s already closed. I hope, its the gps-modul. I’ll pick it up tomorrow before I go on a small tour from Berlin to Dortmund and Northern Spain. Perfect, to test it…

So I downloaded the software and tried to get some maps.

First thing is: Please work on the mac-software, to prepare the maps on a computer. I would like to make a file with many different locations. For this trip I have to decide, Spain or Dortmund…

Second: I wasn’t able to finish any card-download. I tried small parts like the Berlin-Area (ca. 1 GB) and a bigger area between Düsseldorf and Dortmund. Download startet ( very slow!) but the app quit after a while (ca. 1.5% – 3% downloaded).

    I use a 1st gen. iPhone with 2.0.2.

Thanks for the great work and go on make it the perfect iPhone-navi-system…

  20. Mathieu says:

Yes it should be your order :-) .

We know the problem of the maps downloading.. We are working on it as on other bugs. And yes there will be an application to download maps on the computer and then put it on the iphone.

    Hello,

I have received my GPS Modul but i have some difficulties with him. I can’t to connect my moule i have a blue light and a red light who flashes. and when i connect at Xgps, i can’t to use this program .

  23. Mathieu says:

We don’t provide any hardware support for the iGPS360. We only develop the software part. If your module is flashing red and blue it means that it cannot get a fix (it cannot see enough satellite to give your position). Try to use your GPS outdoors without any building around. If it is still not working, contact OrangeGadgets directly.
