First public software preview available

From the last time we wrote, a lot of work has been done.

First a little word about the hardware. We are still waiting some crucial components to finalize the product but it should be (and MUST be) finished next week. We will then open the orders.

We have worked a lot on the software side. It is not still finished but it is at least somehow usable. You can scroll a map, download a map, get driving directions to a place / address and get your GPS position showed on the map. There is even voice support. It means that driving directions are spoken into your earphones. Just try to push the Go To button and enter the desired driving directions. Then click on Go To and listen to. You should hear the first driving direction.

As you will see there is still some work to do. There is no way to go to a place by entering its name. Driving directions should change according to the GPS position but it’s not currently the case and finally scrolling the map is really hard. It will be improved. And last things: to zoom in / zoom out, double tap the map with one / two fingers. It should be also improved :-) .

You will also notice the ability to download maps to be used offline, without any Internet connection. To use this feature, just tap on the Maps button. Then use your two fingers to select an area of the map you want to download. Click on download and the map is downloaded and can then be used offline. You have to know that the maps are downloaded at the deepest zoom level only (the zoom level which is set at the launch of the software).

How to test this first version:

  1. Just use the Installer and add the following repository: http://irepo.xwaves.net
  2. Refresh your sources and then go to the Xwaves category and install the xGPS software.
  3. Exit the installer and launch the new xGPS software that appears on your home screen. It will work even if you have no GPS and should work both on iPod touch and iPhone.

Please notice that there is no support for this version of the software. It is only proposed for testing purpose.

Stay in touch for hot news, next week.

Here is the main screen. Thank you to the iSpazio team for the screenshots of this article.

What baudrate is the GPS set at? I need a version for 9600 baud (is the source code available so I can fix this?)

  3. igpsd says:

I have the same problem like PmgR, but in my case , it need to set to 38400 baud. Any option I can set so that the GPS can be detected?

  4. Mathieu says:

The baudrate is set to 19200. The iPod / iPhone is using the line for the AiR mode so it seems you cannot open it at a different baudrate. Just manage to use the 19200kbps baudrate.

  5. Thanks for the great info. I hope you’ll follow this with some more great content.

  6. PmgR says:

If that is the case, in the next version you should incorporate the serial port baudrate scanning which will determine what baudrate to use based on what is hooked into the dock connector. This is exactly what gpsd does (and the Hike.app as well). You can find the source here: http://gpsd.berlios.de/

Hope that is of some help.

  7. igpsd says:

or even in a configable plist would be ok. in term of shorten of the scanning time required by scanning, and configable plist is working in Freemap.

  8. Mathieu says:

Actually the baud rate of the iPhone is used to calibrate the clock of the GPS so we don’t need to change it. We could implement in the future an option to set the baudrate in the future. Do you know anything about the Freemap project ? I saw the homepage in Hebrew which is difficult to read for me :-) . Does it work within Europe or USA ?

  9. gnacca says:

will it be compatible with version 2 of the iphone software?

  10. DaveP says:

Any new updates yet please advise thanks

  11. Mathieu says:

It will be compatible with firmware 2.0 but only when a Jailbreak solution will be out.

  12. Blackhatseo says:

I think you should post more often, I have enjoyed this so far. Added to my reader. SusanO

  13. Nice post, you got some good points there – thank you.

  14. igpsd says:

will this software open source ? as I want to port it to iphone 2.0

  15. Mathieu says:

We first designed the software to be open source but because of some legal constraints it will remain closed source for now. Maybe we will open it in the future. But it will be free.
We will port it to firmware 2.0 too.

  16. DaveP says:

Where can i get the new 2.0 JB version as I have moved my phone to 2.0 and really want to use this product

    Thanks

  17. Mathieu says:

The 2.0 version for jailbroken device is not currently available. It will be in about one week. Thank you for your patience.

  18. Joost says:

This software is now no longer hosted on Installer? Since i can’t find it at the named repo. Maybe switching to cydia is a better option, that one seems to have gained popularity plus personally i must say it just works better.. But where can i find the software right now?

  19. Mathieu says:

The software should be on the specified repository. But it was an early release. Things are going to change. We are actively developing a new version for the firmware 2.0. This version will be on Cydia. We hope to release it on the beginning of September.

  20. Joost says:

great. Looking forward to it. GPS is the only thing i’m missing on the iTouch.

  21. Morcegolas says:

Great job, so this software for 2.0 firmware is going to support a hollux gps device conected to my iphone by cable?

    Thanks!

  22. Talos says:

    Since i’m very interested on ordering this GPS module for my 1.1.4 Iphone 8GB i downloaded today from the repository given above the xGPS software 1.0p1 version (i think) and installed. Problem is that it doesn’t start up, stay’s for a couple of seconds at start up screen (map with the road) and then closes. Why is that happening; Does it need the module connected (i had the impression that it could be used without it);What could be the problem;
Thank you and keep up the good work!

  23. Mathieu says:

This version is no more supported as a new version will come out for firmware 2.0 The version will first only be compatible with our xGPS Module.
